There are many things that can make your check engine light turn on. The best thing you can do is get your codes pulled. Most auto parts stores will do it for free. In the meantime you can check the basics: air filter, oil level, spark plugs for odd residue or build-up,check the spark plug wires for abrasions, cracks, or rigid spots along the length of the wire (remember to do this one wire at a time to avoid mixing the wires up). A big thing to pay attention to is the distributor cap. Pull the cap and check the points and rotor for build-up or damage. Also look for any rust inside the distributor cap. If it has been awhile you may just want to perform a full tune-up. All the parts in your engine have pretty tight tolerances so just because they pass a visual inspection doesn’t mean they are working completely up to speck.
