hey, I have a 99 grand Cherokee limited,and I got the same type noise,comes and goes, mostly when I first start it up in the morning,and it accelerates when i push on the gas??
inside the car you cant tell if its coming from the transmission or engine compartment.
any ideas??

I would remove the drive belt (Serpentine) and listen to it to see if the noise is gone. I have seen a lot of belt related noises with those vehicles.
