The cruise control in my 1999 crv has trouble maintaining a steady speed on flat ground. I could set it for say 50 mph and it’ll accelerate a bit past that, then coast back down, then accelerate past the set speed then coast again, etc. It only seems to do that on flat ground though, going up or down a slight hill it holds the speed fine. I do have aftermarket rims on it. However, it still does it with the stock rims also. Any idea what is causing this?

speed sensor pick up unit in transmission. It’s normally right next to one of the front drive axles. Easy way to check is to locate it, loosen attachment bolt, get vehicle up on stands and start engine>engage gear to the speed CC will stay on.
Then wiggle pick up unit back -for and see what happens.
They have plastic worm gear that gets worn out with age. Tilts cause better gears grip. It’s serviceable part. Costs about 8-10 bucks. The gear itself.

I failed to mention this in the beginning this is a manual four-wheel-drive CRV.

I did what you recommended. When I remove the bolt and try to put it in gear to set the cruise control it would not set. So, I had my wife sit in the car I pushed the sensor down to hold it in the position and then trying to wiggle it and move it up and down and the cruise control turned itself off. I’ve attached some photos for your viewing pleasure.

                Most welcome.
Huh, I actually guessed right. You know how I found about those? My speedo on 96 Galant started acting up, along with cruise that is tied into speedo. frost Transmission in Gadsden AL quoted me $800 to “replace worm gear ring in differential”, that I later found was a non-existent part for those cars. They made it up.
On pure hunch, I wiggled that speed pick up unit, and speedo came back to life. I even drove for 6 months with sock jammed there to hold it against the gear right. Then I found that worm gear itself can be replaced for $8 and about 15 minute job.
Glad I could be of help. V-s are good cars.
                Stay away frokm frost’s, btw.
