I have a 1998 Tracer, 2.0L, automatic, 153K miles. At idle I have a pretty strong viberation. The engine isn’t missing and it’s constant. I don’t think the engine is idling too slow and this tends to be a known problem with this engine. So far I have cleaned and verified the IAC is functioning correctly. I’ve cleaned the MAF sensor. I have verified there are no vacume leaks and I have replaced the motor mounts (the bottom two WERE bad). Its not bad at all if it’s out of gear or if I take my foot off the brake. The engine runs well otherwise. Any thoughts.comments are much appreciated. Thanks!!

I havent had the dropped valve seat and hope I don’t. My next step is a little injector cleaner and if it makes any differance, I may go ahead and replace/clean the injectors. Honestly though, I have got the problem about 85% licked. When I turn the headlights and/or A/C on it gets a little worse, but for the most part it’s not bad at this point. The engine mounts made the biggest difference and three of them were obviously bad. Cleaning the MAF sensor and IAC also helped I think. I let every one know what happens after I run some fuel injector cleaner through it! Thanks everyone!

For those of you that may still be following this thread…..

          To recap….

Got car back from daughter….very very “course” idle…..had always been tha way
On initial inspection found the PCV valve assembley (valve and associated hoses) in very poor condition. Fixed that, put in clean air filter Cleaned MAF sensor and cleaned/verified proper operation of IAC valve. The over all improvment to the idle was slight. I replaced all four engine moutns….two of which were obviouly bad. It improved a little more….maybe 40% better over all. Now…here is the kicker….I waited until I was almost out of fuel and dumped a can of fuel injector cleaner in the tank and filled up. I have put maybe 60 miles on it since then and the idle is approximatly 90% cured. It is well with in acceptable levels (espically for a “third” car), condiering what I use it for. I have a hard time beliving that the injector cleaner helped THAT quickly. Maybe it was taking the computer a while to adjust everyhting after reciving differnt input from the MAF sensor. Bottom line…..I’m a happy camper. I still have some issues with perhaps the timing belt, a strange noise comming from the back center of the engine (as near as I can tell), and replacing the half shafts and ball joints, but those are different things and I will start differnt threads as I get to them.

To all that helped me, please know that it is greatly appreciated!!!! : )

Glad you got the vibrations down to a minimum !! I cannot wait for the spring to work on my escort more. I have new quick strut assemblies in the house waiting to go in and I also want to replace all my motor/tranny mounts. Keep us posted on your tracer!1 Stay dirty all
