We are working on a 1998 Saturn SC2 1.9l Manual Transmission…The shifter stopped working so we popped the center console out and the right cable actually broke off the end that connects to the shift tower.
We got new cables and installed them with all new bushings. We hooked everything up and have ran into a really weird problem…
The shifter will go into every gear BUT reverse. It literally will not go into reverse. The transmission shifted perfectly fine before the cable broke, so we are confident the transmission is fine and it appears to be something off with the right shifter cable when you pull it back into reverse.
Any ideas of what could be causing this??

Did the car have any lockout feature to keep you from shifting into reverse instead of 4th gear? Any other gears that don’t engage perfectly?

Some sc2’s might. I think if you can’t get into reverse, the cable might have too much slack in it.I thank you all for your suggestions…
We figured out what we were doing wrong and it is really, really stupid.
Basically my brother was testing the gears by going from 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> R
Well when you try to go from 5 -> R it locks out reverse…if you pass neutral from any other gear it goes into R with no problem…Him being a junior mechanic has him really embarrassed about it, but now he knows. He thought with it being parked, off, and the parking brake pulled up that it wouldn’t matter, but it does.
