Can anybody give me location. I’m wanting to change the speed sensor (transmission, manual)
I know from the name it’s in the tranny or transfer case. So when I get under there to change it I find 3 different 2 wire terminal plug ins threaded into the transmission so now I don’t know which is the speed sensor.
There’s one threaded in up at the front of tranny right side /passenger) and 2 more threaded in further back right side passenger. Anybody able to tell me which is the speed sensor I’m wanting to replace.
I have the repair book for the truck but it says nothing about this sensor location

      Thanks

Went to the link you sent me, followed the advice but still can’t locate that dang vehicle speed sensor on my 98 Nissan Frontier 4WD XE manual tranny
I can’t see any sensors on the left side. When stating left side do they mean in that link left as sitting behind the wheel.

Any more assistance you can give on locating this thing would be appreciated

              Thanks

Thank you, I’ll have another look hopefully I can spot it. Spent an hr under there yesterday, couldn’t find any wires/ connectors running from the bottom left side. It has to be there somewhere and I’m missing it.

                  Thanks for the assistance

Still can’t see anything on the rear bottom left of tranny. My tranny is a 5 speed manual, could it be located on the right side

Thank you for that link, from looking at that I know exactly where the VSS is located now.

Once again thanks so much that solves my problem. Also thanks to college man for replying and
                        assisting me

Okay, went to Autozone and got the speed sensor for my truck. When I took the one in the truck out it looks nowhere near what they gave me. It has a red plastic gear on the end inside the tranny while the one they gave me has a blade on it.
Does anybody know if this is a substitute / improvement for the gear end sensor in the truck up and this blade type work.
AutoZone says it’s the correct speed sensor for my 98 Frontier 4WD manual tranny.

                          thanks

What do you mean by “blade” ? Could that be the gear shaft and you are to transfer the gear from the old sensor to the new?

Hi, the first pic is the “blade” type the 2nd is the gear end one that’s presently in the tranny.

I went back to AutoZone and they swear this blade type will work in my tranny. We’ll see I guess

Has your tranny been swapped? The 2nd pic looks like one from a car like an Altima. If your old sensor has a gear, the new one needs to have a gear also. If you go to get a different sensor, take the old one with you to show the counter person.

No it’s the original tranny, I bought the truck new in 98. The 2nd pick is not the exact one in the truck, I just used that pic as a reference to the plastic gear on the end.
I think you may be correct, maybe the plastic gear on the present one needs to be put on the tranny end blade type. The sensor in the truck appears to have what looks like a lock ring on the very end of the shaft.
I’ll have to take it out again tomorrow and see if that plastic gear assembly can be removed.

                                  Thanks

I found this on Nissan USA parts site. Appears that plastic pinion gear does have to be installed on the end.

                                    Thanks for all your input
