My grandfather (who sadly passed away in 2009) had a 1998 nissan frontier. We put a net battery in in 2012 and it ran for about a week and then stopped. This year we charged up bat and tried to crank it over but it had the infamous crank no start. We sprayed starting fluid in throttle body and ran for about 5 secs. We then replaced fuel filter and still NOTHING, then with my new power probe 3 tested the fuel pump fuse, the relay, and fuel pump, and were all good, when we tried to crank car w/ fuel lines off no fuel came out. Could that be clogged lines? also it is in a bad neighborhood and somebody really wanted it but we did not sell it so could it be act of sabotage? just wondering, anything helps@!!!!!!!!!!!

I would check for a broken timing belt. If there is no crank signal, the fuel pump may not run.

Simplest way is to look for the valves moving when you crank the car.

Also, when you first turn the key to start, the fuel pump should run for a few seconds. .. try turning the key and have someone in back listen for the fuel pump to run. ..

I would check to listen if the fuel pump turns on a few seconds when you turn the key to run position. .. the fuel pump should turn on for 3 to 5 seconds to get pressure going. … The pump will not stay running unless it gets a signal from the crank or the cam sensor. .. so also check connections on the cam/crank sensors. ..

Lastly. .. ensure there is really gas in the tank. .. sometimes, the sending unit has issues and the tank is actually empty…

Does the fuel pump run? If you have the tools, test the current draw of the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is running and drawing current then perhaps there is a mechanical problem in the pump assembly. Trash, hose off, sock off, etc. (inside the tank). You can get a replacement pump or replace the whole assembly.

I checked for fuel pump sound and there is gas in the tank the sensors could be the problem thanks for advice

Fuel pump does run and get current tested w/ my power probe it could also be fuel pump thanks for advice

One other thing it runs for about 5 secs IF starting fluid is sprayed in so it must be loss of fuel but anything still helps!!!!!

The fuel pump may be running but it may not be able to produce a sufficient volume of fuel to run the engine. OR there’s a restriction in the system somewhere. You might try replacing the fuel filter. If you know your getting current to the pump, then either the pump is at fault or the fuel lines are blocked up somewhere. Come to think of it, the inlet to the pump could also be the issue. I’d replace the fuel filter. If that doesn’t work, remove the pump and inspect it and the tank.

                    Posting this for good measure.

Thank you do much for responding eric!!! The filter was replaced and current is getting to pump. I agree it could be lines because it starts w/ starting fluid but pump is probably dying anyway thanks for help!!!!!!

                        Update

Since this post I have gotten service manual for the truck. There is power to fuse but from fuse to relay and relay to pump there is no current whatsoever. I also realized there was a piece of crap alarm that I think is the culprit. I unplugged the alarm but still nothing. Do you think they cut the pump wires and wired it to Alarm and when the alarm failed the pump isn’t working. Anything helps! Thanks in advance

Here is the wiring diagram. Test for voltage at the two top relay terminals. the ECM supplies ground to the relay to make the fuel pump run. If you jumper across the contacts of the fuel pump relay the fuel pump should run. DO NOT apply 12VDC to the ECM wire.

We sprayed starting fluid in throttle body and ran for about 5 secs.

That’s a strong clue you should be chasing a fuel problem. You did some preliminary tests. Here are some additional ideas:

                              – Measure fuel pressure with key in the KOEO position. How does it compare to spec? Remove the key and let the car sit. How much does the pressure drop after 1 hour? Your pump could be working fine, but delivering insufficient fuel pressure. Leakdown could indicate a fuel leak somewhere.
                              – Listen to injectors while starter cranks (stethoscope or screwdriver). Are they clicking?
                              – Check for power/signal at the injectors while cranking? Use an LED test light (or maybe power probe?).
