      Hi,
I have a question I recently bought a 1998 Jeep Cherokee with a little over 200,000 miles on it. It runs great…. The only concern I have recently had is, if it has been sitting for a while, an hour or so, when I start it there is a rumbling sound. I can feel the rumble as well. It only lasts until I get down my alley then it is gone it doesn’t come back while driving. There is no noise while driving. Also, it seems to be more heavy in the morning after sitting over night.

I’d get undertheath the truck when it’s cooled off and poke and prod along the entire length of the exhaust system. Give the catalytic converter and muffler a few good smacks and shakes, listen for anything loose rattling around inside.

It’s possible there might be a loose something or other that rattles when cold, but gets happy when things expand a bit with heat, or nestles down inside the cat or muffler with exhaust flow.

The Catalytic Converter in my 1996 Cherokee is failing. This results in rattling on startup until it warms enough for the honeycomb to expand and stop the rattle against the case.

This may be your problem as well.

Same thing happened to my ’98 Grand Cherokee as happened to Petej – the rattling was caused by a failing catalytic converter. That said, it wasn’t a “rumbling” that I could feel as the OP describes, so… your mileage may vary.

Mine is so badly broken up that you can feel it inside from the passenger seat (Driver only picks up the noise though) . It’s hard to describe, but it does transfer some vibration to inside the cab.
