Hello, I have a 1998 Honda CR-V LX 2wd 4 cylinder 2.0L AT that until the last 6 months or so ran perfectly. About 6 months ago it started having intermittent hard start issues, most of the time it would start right up no problem but sometime it would crank for a while and then start, slowly this got to be more of a problem so now it always has a problem starting after sitting for 30 minutes or more. If you shut it down and start it again within 30 minutes it will start back up just fine.
It starts out just cranking not even a hint that it is trying to start, then it goes to kind of a rocking type thing it does while trying to start and it also sounds like there is air escaping from the intake. Then eventually it will catch and the RPM’s will jump up a little over the 1 on the RPM gauge and you can let go of the key and it will sound almost like a lawn mower running and within 5 – 10 seconds it will catch and rev up to around 2000 RPM’s and sounds completely normal.Once it is started it runs perfectly fine no issues no lack of power no stalling nothing.
What I have done to it so far.
New plugs, new wires, new rotor bug, new distributor cap, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new fast idle, new idle air control, cleaned the throttle body, checked compression which was 120 on all 4 cylinders, I got a new main relay for the fuel pump and injectors, disabled the after market alarm that was put in it.The only thing that has made any difference but only works temporarily is I can remove the air box and tube and move the wires for the map sensor and tps and remove the fast idle and adjust it slightly doesn’t matter which direction and put it all back together and then it will start up right away but after a couple of days it will slowly get harder to start until it just refuses to start at all as in it will completely drain the battery trying to start it until I go back through the same process above. The battery does not sound weak or anything until it has been cranked to long.
I’m just lost now I don’t know if that means there is an issue with the fast idle, if there is a wire in the wiring for the tps and map sensor that has an intermittent connection or whats going on.
It never throws any codes other that occasionally saying that there is a misfire on random cylinders while it is having the hard start problem and once there was a code for the tps a long time ago when all of this started.
Any help or insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks
