I have a ’98 Honda Civic Ex coupe with 232,000 miles. I took it in for a front and rear alignment and the mechanic was unable to adjust the right rear toe. He was able to loosen the toe adjustment bolt and move the adjuster. Apparently, no matter which way he moved the adjuster in the slot, he was unable to adjust the toe. He said that it just would not change and he had no idea why.

This doesn’t quite make sense to me, if the adjuster is moving, it should be moving the trailing arm in or out, changing the toe. Has anyone heard of this happening/know what it could be from?

The tires are good and I don’t want to wear them unevenly. The current toe angle is way out of spec, so I would like to address this if possible. Any help appreciated.

You could just check it yourself. In order to check the condition of the toe – front or back prop a straight edge up on blocks or run a string (wire) line from rear of the rear tire to front of the front tire (a friend helps). Adjust the steering wheel so the front tire is parallel to the straight edge. Move the straight edge to the other side of the car without moving the steering wheel and note the distance the front or rear tire is out of square. Also measure wheel to wheel on front and back to make sure the wheel to wheel distance is the same on both.

Has to be on a flat surface but is as good a way as any to check your toe.

You and your friend can continue by measuring center to center front wheel to rear wheel on each side.
