      hi everyone, my names Chris

OK i had the worst possible day, on Friday march the 13th. and exactly a month after buying my Honda. (valentines day).

i snapped my timing belt. a block from my house. so i push it home, this is when i figure out what happened……and when i found out what an interference engine is. D16y7

long story short i pulled the head too see exactly what i was dealing with…..actually wasn’t as bad as i thought it would be…it must have happened when i was giving it gas from a dead stop, none of the valves look damaged or bent. pistons are fine too.

but to be better safe then sorry i decided to just get a rebuilt head instead of trying to get mine rebuilt or checked and a new timing belt kit with water pump/ pulley with spring and the full gasket kit for the head with seals and everything.

now for my problem’s, i have “never” done this before, i have worked on cars before but this is my first time this deep in the guts of it. i have no idea how to find the TDC on the cylinder head when its not attached to the block. i cant find any info on how to set it. i also have no idea where some of the seals/gaskets go from the kit

i also have to pull pieces off my old head for the new one (cam gear, intake and exhaust studs(wont come loose), both coolant line connectors(still fighting with one ) and both sensors (i got them off…..any idea what the sensors are called?)

if anyone knows where i can get a new set of intake and exhaust studs and a price would be very much appreciated because i really don’t think these old ones are gonna come out.

if anyone can help me out that would be great, i can take pic’s of anything to show you.

      thank you

      Chris

        Go here:

        http://workshop-manuals.com/honda/

Find your car and make your way all the way through to the proper section. Has annoying donation request pop up but otherwise that’s as factory manual as it goes.
The only thing to keep in mind, when you will be aligning timing marks with the engine block edge, use mirror as fender covers engine block edge, and you can’t really get your head down far enough to the proper level. So you slide mirror between the fender and engine and stand on the engine opposite side and align marks based on reflection. And get yourself some Woodruff keys as you WILL loose one that holds main pulley in place. 5 bucks or so any parts store, just buy a kit.
Otherwise, it’s very easy job. Esp if you have to redo it about 5 times, he-he. And get timing light. You’ll need it.

The TDC for the Camshaft is indicated in the photo. It should be relevant as the Cam Shaft Pulley can only go on in one single spot due to the woodruff key.

oops i forgot to say i already took the main pulley off (didn’t loose the key!) made sure of that!

that whole side of the engine is apart ready for the new water pump and belt and pulley so i should be good on that. will keep the mirror in mind

been looking on that site i cant find how to time the engine? can you post a link to that specific page i don’t know what to look for so i can bookmark it.

For the Ignition Timing it is literally identical as to on a Acura Integra. Eric Has a Great Video.

hey guys im back again…..i got the engine back together. (nothing hits anything) i fired the car up and it runs choppy had to turn the distributor . the belt might be off a tooth but im not sure i was going to adjust the timing too see but i cant get the 2 pin service plug to do anything, no matter how i jump it….no check engine light. is there anything else i can do? i can upload a video and pictures to explain more…….

I’m kinda stuck any help would be much appreciated

                  chris

If you can upload a video/pictures to explain, that would be helpful – there are quite a few things that could be causing the engine to run rough.

For timing, a timing light is very helpful.

Plugs gapped properly? Good wires/Distributor cap?

If you believe the timing belt could be a tooth off, your best bet will be to get back down in there, and make sure it is all lined up properly. You really don’t want to play with that being off, even if it is just a tooth. There should be markings on the timing belt itself for the correct positioning on the pulleys.

sorry it took me so long to post back, been working

this is the best picture i could get of the timing marks on the balancer and the cross hairs…….the cam gear is perfectly lined up with the edges of the head. but from what i can see the top dead center mark on the crank gear looks off too me

excuse my video….my gf was recording for me and i lost my train of thought trying to remember everything i wanted to show.. its very embarrassing

the car will run the way it is but after it warms up it idles really low and almost stalls out and the timing belt starts making a humming noise and there is a very slight clicking coming from the valves which im not sure where it is actually coming from (the video of the i started it shows this…sorry was excited that it actually ran)

please let me know what you think….im having a hell of time getting the balancer bolt off but soon as i do i can take pictures/ video of the belt exposed

i messed up didnt know i couldnt post a mp4 video….im uploading them on youtube and i’ll add them to the post in just a bit

                      hopefully they work

The distributor should not be all the way turned back, as that leaves no room for adjustment. That indicates that the timing belt is off by one tooth. The tension on the timing belt looks ok. Set the engine to TDC on compression stroke, remove the timing belt, reposition cam and crank sprockets to correct markers, reinstall the belt being careful not to nudge the sprockets.
