Hello, everyone! I have a slight issue with my Civic that I’m hoping to gain some insight into with the help of you all.
As the subject states, the vehicle in question is a 1998 Honda Civic EX, manual transmission. I’ve had this problem since I’ve had the car, which is going on three years now. I have a clicking noise when I initially accelerate, or, more specifically, I hear a single click when I either put a load on the engine by engaging the clutch in gear, or by letting off the throttle while in gear, and again each time I switch from either state to the other (throttle on, in gear/ throttle off, in gear). I originally suspected engine mounts but the noise does not appear to be coming from them so much as my suspension. To save myself a bunch of typing and get you all a better idea of my issue, I made a video detailing my problem.

I’ll admit to not watching the video because I’ve run into this problem a lot, check the strut rod bushings in the core support, it’s common for them to wear out or become contaminated with oil causing the bushings to fail and produce a noise exactly like you describe as the job of the strut rod is to locate the suspension and keep it from moving forward or backward such as during acceleration or braking. If the area is soaked with oil then you should also address the oil leak which is the root cause. If I’m wrong here’s a video for you.

I went and took a second look at my suspension, and, unfortunately, like before, I still couldn’t seem to find anything that was bad, not even the strut rod bushings. I think I was looking at the right part. I did however notice that one of my engine mounts is actually quite worn. I had noticed this earlier, but it didn’t seem like it could be so bad as to be making the clicking sound, but seeing as how I couldn’t seem to find anything wrong in the suspension, I went ahead and ordered the part and am planning to replace it once it gets here. The more I think about it, I think it is quite possible that it’s theis mount, because it ONLY happens when I’m in gear and get on or let off the throttle, which puts a fair amount of stress on the mounts.. It does NOT happen during hard braking in either direction, which doesn’t put significant stress on the engine mounts. I’ll post back later after the fix and hopefully this is the fix. there will be pics!
