I would replace the transaxle fluid with OEM Honda ONLY fluid to start with,_x000D_

As for your trans issue’s with your other vehicle, if it was a high mileage trans with no history of transmission service, that is sometimes a disaster waiting to happen if yo

I second that. Go to the dealer, buy 3 quarts of Honda ATF, and see if a drain and refill helps.

Thanks for suggestion and link. Going to take on this project Sunday if all goes as planned. Only concern I have is that the dip stick to transmission on the 4 cyl is the type with the large rubber bulb seal to it and last time I looked, sand etc was arou

Buy a couple cans of brake cleaner, and go to town on the area around the dipstick if there’s sand built up around there.

Yes start with a fluid change with Honda fluid as suggested.

Just wanted to state that the flush of old and new Honda ATF Fluid made a difference. 145k miles now and still going strong although last night I got worried for a sec when the Battery light came on for a sec at a stop sign. Battery is only 1 yr old so its not that. When i got on the gas to go I heard the belt slipping and when the belt stopped slipping the red battery light went out so i am hoping “fingers crossed” that I am not going to be replacing an alternator in the near future. Original 15 year old alternator so it can go at any time. At least its location seems to be easy to get to vs the one that was buried on the 1997 Mazda 626 DX that I use to own until it rotted out at 160k miles and the fuel pump putting out low pressure to fuel rail ( not filter issue ) was the final decision to give it to salvage yard. At least this 1998 Honda Civic EX is worth putting money into as long as it doesn’t exceed 50% of its worth. If it lost a transmission or had anything serious like punch a rod thru block or main bearings etc it would be gone, but if head gasket ever goes, I’d take that on and hopefully not be replacing a warped head. There is a great guy who has a machine shop 30 miles away that can plain heads and inspect for issues. Replaced them before, just not on a Honda yet!

Glad to hear the fluid change helped. As for the alternator don’t make assumptions. Just because the battery is only a year old that doesn’t mean it’s not bad. Test it and verify it. I don’t think that’s the issue based on your description anyway. It sounds more like a loose belt or low idle situation. I’d check the belt tension and make sure your idle is at the correct RPM. As for stuff happening to the engine, once again don’t make trouble where there isn’t any. Do work based on the evidence NOT what you think might happen. Auto repair is a science not a guessing game. Keep us posted.
