hi there, i have been working on my 1998 honda civic EX. i have done some basic mods to the car, mostly upgrading the suspension and brake system to something that could accommodate more HP. my question now is, would i be better off swapping my D16Y8 for one identical, or would it be a better investment in the long run as far as power, and performance to up grade to a B16 or B18? i know there would be a lot more work involved in upgrading to the B-Series, but if its worth it, then why not? 🙂

I have a 98 civic as well, with a b18/b16 combo and it is deffinatly more fun than stock. But yes alot of time and money. So if you dont have mechanic friends or arent one yourself i would proceed with caution.

It all depends on budget and what you’re trying to do with the car…

I would swap a b18 in it if your on a budget get a b18b1 its 142hp stock and you can get a whole swap for under $1500.00 and you always can go ls vtec latter.

i’m running a B18b1 in my hatch, and after a couple weeks of driving with the new engine, it’s just not fast enough anymore. i would go with GSR swap, even if that means waiting longer for the money to do it. Say you’ve already spent 1500 on the LS swap and spend another 1500 in performance upgrades, is that extra 1500 gonna net you 30 more hp that the GSR has? it’s not. The GSR is a better base to start out with… plus it has a girdle and oil cooler from the factory.

I had a 97 Civic and you have to be careful because they are not performance cars. A more practical and more boring way to get more performance is to trade your car for a Civic Si or an Integra Type R or the GSR, whichever has the 190+ hp B18 engine. You only should replace the current engine with an identical one if you want to go with the supercharger or turbocharger route and your current engine is not mechanically sound.

              Also, take it autocrossing.

GSR’s & ITR’s have about 170-180 hp stock, btw…. And it doesn’t take much to make a civic a performance car, it’s all about power to weight ratio and civic’s are light.

depends on your budget. Just remember, “You get what you pay for”. If you go cheap, H series is the cheapest and fastest to get more hp. Their transmissions IMO suck. Another cheap route, boost your single cam. or boost an LS. Got high budget? B18c sleeved on boost. K swap. Very high budget, money no object? All motor K swap. All motor will always be mroe expensive than turbo/supercharged. Im running b20vtec all motor and i couldve already had a sleeved low boosted b18c1. -_-

If your wanting to drop a b16 or b18, I would do it on a 92 to 95. Just going to have a lot less issues. It is a lot more work on 96-2000. Harder to convert obd2 to obd1. Your going to have to do your homework to get a good ECU working in a 96-2000.

Whats going on with your current D16Y8?

well you can run a obd2 engine and harness and just buy a obd1 to obd2 ecu harness. This is my set up right now
                      B20b block obd2
                      B16a head obd2
only things i chaged were Alternator(obd1), injectors(rc 550 obd1), and using a dizzy obd2 to obd1 jumper harness. Engine harness is OBD2 GSR and it plugs and plays perfect.

but yes 10x easier to just get a b16a2 from 99-00 civic si and drop it in.
