I have a 1998 honda civic manual transmission and it has a staring issue. In the video bellow you guys can see that at first in turns on but then when i turn it off and try to crank it up again it wont and instead it just “clicks”. Sometimes, after a couple of tries or turning the key back to off and trying it again works but it does it at random. It has a new starter, good battery, and a new alternator. i dont know what it could be. Thank you Eric and fellow forumers for reading!

It also has the check engine light on and it is for bank 1 efficiency.

        check your clutch interlock switch.

I would check the clutch switch as suggested but I would also not rule out the possibility that the ignition switch is having a problem.

thanks a lot! I will definitely check those two things. Although i think it is going to be the ignition switch because I bought a new interlock switch and it still gave me the same problem; i ended up returning it and putting the old one back. I will check the ignition switch and Ill let you guys know what happened 😀 thank you once again for your time Eric!

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘interlock switch’. Could you be more specific on that?

If you are getting a click, it is NOT interlock switch. Assuming Honda does NOT have separate starter relay, I am afraid your new starter is not good. Is the click coming all the way from the engine? It could be also simple bad contacts at the wiring. If you are really hearing the click, starter is trying to engage but it can not because either
                  1) It is defective
                  2) Or it is not getting good hefty solid current from the battery

With bad ignition switch or bad interlock switch, you will hear nothing.

Agreed. If you hear a ‘click’ then it’s likely the starter is getting a signal. Perhaps it’s your installation. Make sure everything is connected correctly on the new starter and that the starter is installed correctly. You can also check for the feed voltage at the solenoid using the info in the video. Also, don’t forget to check and clean the battery connections. Keep us posted.

Thank you Eric and vgs for the help. It ended up being that the “new” starter was defective. It was a bit funny since the starter said “triple tested” I guess they should have tested it once more HA! Anyways, the problem is fixed and thank you once again!

That’s a happy ending and we’ll take that. Thanks for keeping us updated and for using the ETCG forum.
