My car has 173,000 miles on it and here lately I’ve noticed that if I have my A/C on for about 5 minutes sitting, my temperature gauge will say it’s running hot. But as soon as I cut the A/C off the temperature will Drop immediately down to normal temperature. Is it my thermostat?

Well, do the cooling fans kick on frequently when the A/C is running? Does the temp gauge go up a tiny bit or are we talking it gets close to overheat?

If the fans are not turning on at all when AC runs, start looking for the problem there.

Yes. Both fans kick on every 3-5 minutes, if not more. When I first got the car it only had one working, and I replaced it. But even with the fans on the gauge will mark over 3/4 hot, it’s very close to all the way. But literally, as soon as I turn off the A/C that needle will drop just like it you were to turn the car off, except it drops to normal running temp.

For the year, won’t hurt having t-stat replaced anyway.
But I’m leaning towards 2 other options:
            1. under-performing radiator/coolant. System needs flush.
            2. when a/c kicks in, it places extra load onto engine. Extra load=hotter engine. See #1.

Well I drained all the old coolant out of the car until it was dry, but I didn’t run any water or nothing to completely take out. I just drained all i could and filled it back up with Peak 50/50 from the store. Was it better if I had put genuine honda coolant?

It is not necessary to use genuine honda coolant. I have a 1999 Honda civic and I use non honda coolant and it’s been working fine for years. But this video may help with your problem:

How fast does the temperature gauge go down when you shut off the A/C? If it goes kerplunk it is an electrical problem – probably a bad ground.

When I turn off the A/C the needle will drop down a few seconds later. It doesn’t drop as fast as it would when you turn the car off, but it doesn’t drop down very slow. Kinda In the middle. But it’s funny that it’ll do it only when the a/c is on and the car is still. Other than that the car is perfectly fine.

Okay, probably not electrical unless you have bimetallic gauges. I have one vehicle where after I leave the pump the fuel gauge takes several minutes to read full. My other vehicle reads full when I turn the key.
