I have a 1998 GMC Jimmy Envoy with 197,XXX Miles 2 codes that seem to never go away random misfire and running rich. the problem is that when you first turn the car on and drive the car moves slow even with the peddle to the floor. i figured i would change the spark plugs and check the fluids and they all seem fine i havent check the timing belt because once the car hits to about 30mph it runs fine i figure if the timing was off it would always run poorly (but im not a genius i could be wrong). 😛 after replacing the spark plugs the check engine light went away and came back with the same codes do i need a new transmission for this problem to be fixed? or is there something else i can do to solve this problem? Is there a test that i can do to know if its the transmission at fault or something i can do to find the real problem. any help here is wonderful! Thanks guys and stay dirty!

Try taking the front o2 out and see if power is restored.

As pointed out in the article above be sure to check for codes. Any codes you have can be an important clue as to what the issue might be. Also be sure to cover the basics. I know you say you’ve replaced the plugs which is a good start, but don’t forget about the air and fuel filters as well as checking the operation and condition of the MAF sensor.

Good luck and keep us posted.

While watching your live talk show today (Loved it never miss an episode!) is it possible for the problem to be the coolant temp sensor? What can i do to test it if i can and sorry for not keeping you up to date work keeps me from being able to get online i try my best to get on to reply. any other things i can look at would be awesome! Btw with the o2 sensor i tried to remove it but the sucker is stuck in there and im unable to remove it. (Lack of proper tools) :[

To remove an O2 sensor, it may help to have the vehicle at operating condition or apply heat locally to the bung… The heat helps..

I don’t believe you have a transmission problem based upon your codes…

When you have a multiple misfire you have to figure out why… Can be so many things… Fuel injectors, fuel pressure, mechanical issues, etc… Since you say the car runs fine at a certain speed I would think less mechanical and more fuel delivery/electric…

Before you replace any parts, I would hook the vehicle up to a scan tool (you also can see what the coolant temperature is reading)… Then I would look at both banks LTFT and check for one that is worse than the other.. Your code should let you know (if one side is running rich anyway)… I.E. PO172 is bank one running rich, P0174 is bank two running rich.. (Bank one has the No #1 cylinder on it)… That way you can narrow down your search for a problem… (I.E. head gasket, leaking fuel injector, etc)… May want to do a cylinder compression test/leak down test on the bad bank’s cylinders)…

Just a tip. Do not use an O2 socket to remove an O2 sensor. They aren’t designed for that. They work great for the install but not for removal. I usually cut the wires and use either the box end of a 7/8 wrench or a 7/8 deep socket. I believe I show the method in this video.

Good luck and keep us posted.

ok well i got the o2 sensor out! replaced and all set thanks for the tip about warming up the car to get it out made it a little easier but careful not to burn yourself!

So, after replacing the o2 sensor the car works a lot better tho the problem is still there. Tomorrow im going to reset the codes and run it and see if any new codes pop up. Im also going to take out the MAF sensor and clean it up and see if that helps any. Ill update the post as soon as i can tomorrow any help is awesome! this hesitation problem is getting annoying.
