I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina 3.1 its running very rough and running hot. I looked at the coolent overflow and it is blowing bubbles like hell, big ones. I am running straight water due to I flushed it out but it looks like light chocolate milk. I am thinking headgasket but maybe excaust manifold gasket. I dont want to waste time and money so any advice on further testing that should be done to comfirm or if you know flat out its the heads please let me know. thank you john.

Just based on the age and probably the comparable mileage involved.. and the symptoms you have described, you would qualify for of course.. a blown head gasket. You don’t have to take my word for it, you should conduct the following tests:

        • block test
        • compression test
        • leak-down test
        • coolant pressure test

How far you actually want to dive into this diagnosis is up to you… I’d probably just do a block test and accept the inevitable.
