I have a 1998 Chevrolet cavalier that i just bought and I wanted to change the transmission fluid because it was a brown but my parts guy told me to flush my transmission with a product called seafoam trans tune first then change the fluid. You put the seafoam in the transmission and it cleans it but now every time i shift from park to reverse or any other gear it jerks at first but then it shifts and drives fine after so I dont know if it was the seafoam or the transmission was just bad or maybe a bad transmission mount. Please help i dont I want to put more money into this car if the transmission is bad.

        1998 Chevrolet cavalier

Harsh shifting to Drive and Reverse = bad engine and/or transmission mounts, which I would tend to believe since you have a vintage GM 98′ cavalier with I assume very high mileage. Your cradle bushings, engine mounts and transmission mounts are probably non-existent.

Harsh shifting in all gears can be a symptom of a stuck or failed accumulator. To check the accumulator(s), you will have to drop the pan, remove the filter, and break into the valve body. Disassemble the accumulator(s) and inspect them. Also, since you are already into it this deep, you could air chuck the various hydraulic circuits to test for proper operation.

In this valve body, the accumulator can be easily recognized as the entire assembly above the “H:”

        Tips o’ the day
Be prepared for 6 to 8 ball bearing sized check balls to fall out and bounce all over the floor when you remove the valve body separator plate. It is extremely important to prevent this as it will be nearly impossible to relocate them in their correct positions and will render your valve body useless. Use petroleum jelly to hold the check balls into the valve body.

Also, watch a lot of youtube on transmission overhaul before you decide if this is a project ye’ would like to get into. Prepare to purchase special tools for transmission work.

If the fluid was brown. You probably had varnish build up.
By adding the seafoam. You may have actually broke that stuff
free causing a line pressure problem.

Thanks I just checked my fluid this morning and it looks to be a little pink which is weird Im going to change the fluid and see what happens and i think one of my engine mounts are bad because when i start my engine it runs good no problems but when you look carefully it shakes. I will keep you posted on what happens when I change the transmission fluid.
