Okay, allow me to give you the scoop. i bought this car not running with an apparent headgasket problem. i got it home bought a low mileage flat head and bolted it down. when i removed the old head i noticed that the cap and rotor had been damaged so now ill give you my shopping list of parts that have been replaced

      -head w/ all necessary gaskets.
      -distributor
      -cap and rotor
      -plugs/wires
      -water pump
      -belt tensioner
      -timing belt
      -ecu
      -cam sensor
      -crank sensor
      -distribution coil
      -main relay

my problem is the car will crank, fire, then it will shut off after about 2 sec then will not fire again until i recycle the key. timing is on trust me i’ve checked about a million times. It has good fuel pressure, and spark. I’m thinking it may be an injector pulse problem but i’m not sure what or how to check this. It doesn’t have any codes the previous owner erased them all. The car did start and run on starting fluid for a short time. Any help would be great thanks guys.

have you got a engine light? checked for any codes? getting some codes may help narrow down your issue and make diagnosis easier.

            UPDATE:

I went out and bought a NOID light test kit to check the injector pulse. I plugged it into the #2 injector harness and when cranking i get one good flash of light then a very rapid dim light. Has anyone seen this before? what could be my possible issues. Note; please do an overview of the replaced parts

sounds like a fuel starvation issue in a way… i would plug a scan tool in again to see if you are getting any codes again just in case, also to read some live data… a engine that runs for a few seconds and then dies usually means its fuel system can’t keep up with the engines demands for fuel and it stops running. usually….

Maybe a loose/bad ground wire? I recently did the head on my 96 accord and it wouldn’t start. Missed the ground on the intake, so the fuel injectors were not firing. Could be your ground is loose so you get a good connection when the engine is static but the vibration from the engine turning over is causing your connection to drop out.

If it is fuel starvation, I would expect a CEL code. I got no CEL code for the ground on mine.

I feel you when you say the timing is on. Can’t even remember how many times I checked that…

This is a very common problem on that vehicle. Head gaskets are not BTW. Neither are fuel delivery problems, unless there’s an issue with the main relay.

If it’s a main relay problem.
