I am looking at one of these cars. This one has 174k original miles, and drives pretty well. After 10 minutes or so, it has “Solenoid B” failure, and drives fine, just takes off in 3rd gear. Would you call this a serious thing?

I’m a Volvo aficionado and I want this car, let me know what you think of them.

There are numerous owner reviews on the internet on these cars if you care to look them up.

This is a very high mileage vehicle (174,000 miles) and the condition of these old cars with high mileages will vary greatly. Because they were mostly good cars once does not mean the example you are looking at is a good buy. Some of them will be never ending repair bills.

If you are serious about buying a car like this then have it professionally inspected (as you should with any used vehicle) so you can get a proper understanding and assessment of the faults and items needing attention (which will likely be numerous) before you lay down any money.

I would pass on any vehicle, especially a high mileage one, that is currently showing signs of faults with the auto transmission (lots of internal wear in critical parts) unless you are wanting to pay for a replacement or rebuilt transmission to be installed which will be expensive in parts and labour charges.

I am presently reading all about solenoids. It seems the whole trans may not need to be replaced.

This link actually has a walk-through.

Also.. Possible dumb Q, though the only dumb Q is one not asked, but. ANY chance a half dozen or so (maybe 4, maybe 8) ATF drain and fills (yes, the Volvo has a bolt specifically for this, yay) will “clean up” the valve body, and a possible stuck CLOSED solenoid (is the electronic control possibly of something stopped up with gunk?)

          Thanks.

I will ultimately find somewhere to perform this: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12985

This really is a somewhat common thing on these cars.

Cleared the codes, ratchet cleaned it (yes that is a real thing on Volvos,) began drain/fill on ATF. That fluid looks nasty, but was maybe thinner than what came out of my 2000 (obviously that one had less miles, and was less abused.)

The codes don’t come back on anymore, and there is *slight* improvement in the problem. Too early to tell if its gonna work, but more cleaning, miles, heat, and time is required.

                There is still hope.

replace you fuel injectors or at least get the set you have tested. I had a 99 v70xc that died at 170000 when an injector was lean, burnt a valve, and the head bolt stuck in the the block. glad your solenoid is better, and hope it stays that way. p.s. youtube is great for a new set of matched injectors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jquUXmuXgDs this is about an 850
