This is my first computer controlled engine and transmission that I am working on. I am trying to take a 1997 Blazer 2 wheel drive vortec 4.3 engine and auto transmission and slip it into a 61 Chevy C10 truck. Someone removed the original engine, transmission, steering column and instrument dash and installed a 75 gremlin straight 6 and 3 speed in the floor. I have to replace all the wire harness in the whole truck. What harness do I need to make the engine run in the old Chevy? Do I need to take all the wires in the engine. How about inside under the dash? I have the mounts figured out and how it all go in but the wiring is stumping me. I have the complete 1997 Blazer as the donor and
I want to be sure to get all the parts needed to get it to run in the 61 Chevy.

That sounds like quite a project if I’m honest. I think you’ll need the engine and transmission harness as well as the computer and it should work. You’ll also have to install an electric fuel pump that is sufficient to supply the correct amount of fuel pressure for that engine. To be honest you need someone that’s done this before to really make it work. Also that seems like a pretty small engine for a truck that size, don’t you think you might be better off with like a 350 out of something with an HEI distributor that is easy to wire up? Maybe you can work a trade or something. Honestly that sounds like a lot of work for a truck that may not have enough power.

          Eric,
If you think about it, The truck came with a 6 cyl 235 cid and I am putting in a 6 cyl 262 cid. I am not looking to burn rubber off the rims. The Blazer (donor)was a very good price to get parts for the swap and I should get the investment back when I Craig’s list the body and spare parts. Then off to the scrap yard with it. I will keep you posted on the progress and as always I am open to comments and suggestions.

You will need all the wiring and the computer from under the hood and the computer and wiring from inside the truck behind the glove box. The wiring harness can stay connected to the engine when you pull it out of the blazer by just unbolting it from the firewall with the bolt that runs through the center. After that bolt is removed the wiring harness will come out as a whole and save you the trouble of remembering where every plug went. The charging and starting system have a separate harness so you will have to disconnect them. As Eric stated you will need the fuel pump or an inline electric fuel pump that can supply enough pressure to the system and they are not cheap so the stock blazer tank may fit somehow. The computer behind the glove box has to be handled very carefully and you must be sure to not let even a static spark jump from your hand to the case. It takes less than .5ma to destroy this computer and it has to be grounded very well before you send power to it. Another good idea would be to hold onto the Blazer until you get the other truck running in case you need other pieces. Hope this helps.
