Usually, when a vehicle (this is particular to my GM experience) sits for a while and then burns oil at cold starts, the valve seals are failing. Oil collects around them and leaks throught while the ending is cooling off. The oil is burned off and once the heat from the engine running causes the seals to expand, they seal correctly again. It usually only happens on colds starts, like I said. If this is what you are experiencing, then you should be fine by making sure the oil level is where it should be regularly. You could also perform a leak down test to see where you are getting oil into the cylinders.

I’m gonna ask a dumb question but what do you mean by “perform a leak down test”? Also, do you know how much it would cost to get the seals replaced?

          +1 on Beefy’s post.

You also may want to do a compression test also as well as checking the PCV system.

Here is a video by Eric on compression testing –

I really appreciate the help! I put a new pcv valve on it and the truck runs really good with plenty of power and doesn’t skip or miss fire at all.

The video I linked shows how to perform a leak down test, and is made by the world famous ETCG, so you know it’s good.

How did you diagnose your issue to being those valve guide seals?

We do have a free link to Chilton’s online in the ‘How To’ section that may show you the procedure for replacing those.

I appears as though my valve seals need replaced. Does anyone know how big of a job this is? I completely rebuilt a 22r a few years ago but it looked a lot simpler than this 3.4 does. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yea unless you did the leak down test you haven’t ruled out worn out piston rings causing the problem. I agree it could be valve seals as suggested based on your description however in my experience if you have worn valve seals it’s also possible the piston rings are worn, this is the reason a leak down test is important so that you can verify the condition of the piston rings because if you just replace the valve seals you’re only addressing part of the problem. Also if you are using synthetic oil switch back to regular oil as synthetic oil can actually cause an engine to burn oil and leak. As for swapping out valve seals it can be done in the truck but you need to know what you’re doing, here’s a video from my friend Duane at RealFixesRealFast.
