ETCG, I know you had a Sonoma in your shop recently for an engine replacement, if you took video of that or could give me a brief rundown of what you had to remove that would really help!

I’m trying to remove the engine from a 97 S10. 2.2L, 5spd, 2wd extended cab. Somehow it still seems to be attached to the tranny. I’ve heard reports of people saying the body needs to be raised to get at some of the upper bolts, but I *think* I’ve got them all. There aren’t any bolts at the very top of the bell housing that I wouldn’t be able to see from below, are there? I got two really hard-to-get bolts, one on the left and one on the right, and I thought those were the last two :S

Do I also need to completely remove the engine mounts? I removed the bolts that go through them, but not the mounts themselves since they’re a bit difficult to get out.

      Any help appreciated. Thanks guys!

never done a clutch or anything like that on this particular model, but ive done a number of clutches on rangers mustangs f-100, and pulled the auto trans out of my sierra, all of them had a single bolt at the direct top of the bellhousing. and yes on the ranger (another mid sized truck) had to jack the cab up 4 inches to get to the damned thing. the others dropped the trans cross member and lowered the transmission which pulled the engine lower i could reach it.

keep an eye on engine clearances though. almost snapped off my distributor when i did this on my sierra.

Yeah, I tried to drop the tranny, but a) I couldn’t get the clutch fluid cable out and b) there are several bolts under the shifter boot, but I couldn’t get the shifter boot out because the geniuses at GM decided to screw it into the floor and lay carpet over the screws -.-” so it looks like jacking the cab is the way to go. I’m just worried about tearing some cable or something and it never going back together. Not to mention I don’t have a jack nearly tall enough. I’m afraid something like that is way beyond my skill set. I’m a complete mechanical noob. To put things in perspective, the biggest job I’ve ever undertaken was repairing the starter in my other car. It’s located right at the front of the engine so it’s easy to get to. It took me six hours. Not including the Home Depot run when I broke a bolt on the end of the starter during reassembly.

My advise is to pull the engine and tranny as a unit ( make sure you put back in any tranny to block bolts you removed -at least the easy ones ) use an engine leveler attachment with the hoist. once out seperating the two is a breeze. also – mount the trans to the new motor BEFORE re-installing ( be sure to plug the tail shaft opening before pulling and or re-installing.

It sure seems like it will. I guess I’ll have to pop them both off. Clearances are a bit tight, I may have to purchase a swivel socket (I’ve been getting by with a swivel adapter up to this point). I’ll give it a go this afternoon and report back. Thanks!

I just did this to a 98 S10! (my first time too) There’s a thin inspection plate on the face of the tranny that won’t let the two come apart until you take it off. Its easy. Just a few small bolts…but the edge of the flywheel hangs on it.

Yup, I did that. I’m gonna do what college man suggested and totally remove both motor mounts as soon as I get home. Then I’ll jack up the tranny at the front and hope for the best.

I presume you had to lift the engine a little first before pulling, to clear the brace in front of the oil pan?

Yes…I also took the motor mounts off the frame so I didn’t have to fight them while pulling the engine. I’ve read that makes life a lot easier….it did.

I didn’t have as much time to work on the truck today as I’d hoped. I got the driver’s motor mount unbolted from the engine (don’t know if that was even necessary), but not the frame. The engine is now visibly lower– I’ll def. put my hoist on it before removing the pass. side completely. Got 3/4 bolts off on the passenger side on the engine, can’t get that fourth off because I don’t have that swivel because Pep Boys didn’t have (never going there again btw) and Advance Auto had a set of ~12 for $40 which I didn’t want to spend. There’s a sensor in there that’s stopping me getting a wrench in there, I feel if I get that sensor out I should be clear. I unbolted the sensor but of course it won’t come out of the engine block  it’s always something  .

I should have more time to work tomorrow… fingers crossed….

Thanks for all the advice guys!

Update: it’s out! I ended up undoing both motor mounts, but that was the least of my troubles… after undoing the last transmission bolt it came right out -.-” I thought I’d got them all, but there was one last one way up on the passenger side where I just couldn’t see it.

Again, thanks for all the help!

Good job ! I HIGHLY recommend bolting the trans to the motor while it is out and stuffing the whole unit back in when the time comes. trust me , it will be much easier that way.
