My 97 Pontiac Grand Am is throwing emissions code P0440. I did a little research on the code and have come to find that my car falls in the model year range which the fuel filler neck is notorious for being this issue. The previous owner of the car put all new sensor in it from the front to the back. I have not had it smoke tested and I really can’t afford to. Is it a great possibility that this is my issue? I have found no visible leakes to the naked eye and there’s not disconnected hoses. And for those who are wondering it’s got 130k miles on it.

Here’s a link that may help you its a forum on evap codes. http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54015. A couple of suggestions is to try rubbing saliva on the seal of the gas cap when you fill up and there may be a PCM update from GM to update the computer to help it not throw false codes

The p0440 code is evap emission system. The system can’t hold vacuum.
possible causes. defective or loose gas cap.
          evap canister or hose cracked
          purge or vent solenoid defective
I would also inspect the filler tube for holes or cracked hoses.

new and tight gas cap new canister and no hoses disconnected. new purge and vent solenoids. My last guess is the filler neck.

So I took the filler neck off the vehicle and I put a clean rag on the end of the neck that goes to the tank and put the gas cap on the neck as well. And when I blew into the filler neck air came out fairly easily at the gas cap. The cap is brand new and upon evaluation of the seal on the filler neck its self I found several deep gouges and plenty of rust holes around the seat of the seal as well.

The best way of diagnosing these issues is with a smoke machine as some of those leaks can be hard to find.

It was smoked a couple weeks before I got it and there were no leaks found. But I did research finding that if you don’t smoke it from the filler neck you may not find a leak. So that’s what I did and I found that the filler neck has a lot of leaks in it. and if it matters it’s a 2000 not a 1997

If youre leaking out of the filler neck itd be the same as a bad seal on the gas cap so Id replace the filler neck

I have ordered a new filler neck and should have it in a few days. I will let you all know what happens after it’s installed.
