My friend has this weird problem with his car. Sometimes, the car will start right up with no problem. Sometimes, it will crank for a few seconds and then turn over. However, at completely random times, the car will just crank and crank and not turn over. Once it starts, it runs fine. We’ve eliminated a bad fuel pump and a bad filter. There are no fuel leaks that i can tell. The spark plugs look good enough to run the car without an issue, although it probably wouldn’t hurt to replace them. And, because it runs fine when it’s started, it’s really hard to tell what the problem could be. I hooked up my scan tool and found a P1335, P0600, and P0141 stored on the computer, as well as another P1335 pending code. It does show a code for a bad O2 heater circuit, which is surprising because I know those sensors have already been changed. The car supposedly has 108,000 miles on it. Honestly, it seems like a shady deal to me. i found a receipt in the glove compartment for an oil change and brand new tires at 99,450 miles back in 2005, and when he bought this car at 101,000 miles last September (2014), the tires barely had any tread on them, not to mention the fact it picked up only 2,000 miles over the course of 9 years. Yeah, right.

Also, as you’ll hear in the video, there is a strange noise coming from the engine compartment (other than the exhuast leak that appears to be coming from everywhere). If you know what this might be, please let me know as it seems to have gotten louder and is kind of concerning.

You may have a problem with the crank sensor. also check the connections at the starter

We checked the connection to the crankshaft sensor. The wiring had gotten into the serpentine belt and was shredded. We discovered this today when the car would not start at all. The previous owner had obviously fixed that issue once before as it had already been taped, but the thought never occurred to actually secure the wire so that it wouldn’t do that again. We cut out what was left of the wire and repaired it and now it fires right up with no trouble. We were doing this when I got your reply in my email, I guess the car repair god was sending us both a message. Thank you for the help, you were spot on with your diagnosis!
However, if you do know what that weird noise is coming from the engine bay it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like either an exhaust leak or something in the pulleys. see if this video helps.
