Check the fuel pressure regulator for leaking gas from the vacuum diaphragm. Use a Mity Vac tool or a long piece of clear tubing so if you start to suck out gas then you will have a bit of warning. The FPR should hold vacuum and not leak any gas if good.

First you will need a fuel pressure tester kit. I got mine from harbor freight tools. comes with different adaptors and was not to expensive. different makes have different places as to where to attach the guage ( some attach to the fuel rail or in the case of my 89 civic to a fitting on the fuel filter- check with a shop manual for your car a good manual will tell the proper pressure you should have ) Quoted From cnorth5863:

I have not tried cleaning the idle control valve…i will give that a try as well as changing the fuel filter. what is the best way to test fuel pressure?

I’m with checking the idle control valve, you might start with a cleaning and if that does have some effect and it’s not perminant you might consider replacing it as I have not had a lot of luck with cleaning those valves.

First I would test the fuel pressure ( also , when was the fuel filter last changed ? ) also check the IAC and look for vacuum leaks. I would go with fuel pressure first off.
