hello I recently got a 1997 Honda Accord 2.2 l4 5speed 215k new clutch. Im having issues passing smog. my car hesitates on acceleration my smog guy says it might be the egr valve stuck which ive cleaned after and the throttle body. but still hesitates on acceleration. after driving it for awhile and go park somewhere and I start it again I have to give it gas to get it to start. I get no obd codes. on a cold start i’ve noticed it idles poorly. I’m thinking its the mass air flow going haywire. Thanks

No codes, I take it? Why did it fail the test?

If your smog guy is on the right track – have you cleaned the EGR passages?

Hesitation and warm start problems – check fuel pressure, injector condition, plugs, distributor cap & rotor, plug wires. Poor idle on cold start – same as above plus ECT sensor.

            Re P1491, start with this:
            https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1997-honda-accord-egr-cel-p1491-97

P0420 indicates either a bad cat or a bad downstream O2 sensor or wiring. Usually the cat. If the cat is 20 years old, it’s very likely going to need replacing. You can use an infrared thermometer to compare the cat’s entry and exit temps.

I am gonna be pulling the intake off and cleaning the egr passages. I read its a common problem on these hondas. I did notice pulling the egr valve off that there is alot of carbon buildup. the cat I can pull off and try cleaning it before replacing it.

I don’t have a infrared thermometer but my Bosch 1300 scanner can get readings from the cat itself.

I just cleaned the egr passages and the egr valley but still got the same problem proforamance issue Im thinking its an ignition problem. I noticed all the spark plugs and cables taking them out all saterated in oil. I can change the seals easy, you think that will solve it? the plugs are ngk and they got a white coating on it. looking lean. thx

Changing the seals is great. Oil in the plug wells is only a problem if it gets deep. Re lean conditions, check out all the factors I mentioned in post 2, but first use your scanner to watch fuel trims.

the car runs better after changing the whole radiator, cap and upper hose. it runs without a problem.

the proformance problem is a folded up radiator hose and it was overheating.

I drive like at low rpms not to notice.

I put laquer thinner in the tank as well so far no check engine lights
