      Hi all:

Here’s the ‘problem’ with the car: there’s vibration in the steering when i press on the brake pedal.

When I gently press on the brake, I could ‘feel’ an area where the brake pad touches the rotor followed by an are where it doesn’t. From somewhat limited experience, I’m thinking it might be problem with the brakepads, rotor, hub, wheel bearing, or any combination of the above.

The car was at the Honda ‘stealership’ for an yearly check up where they diagnosed the brake issue and they said rotor, breakpads, and wheel bearing. I know that confirms my suspicion, but I’m also a little skeptical about the wheel bearing: I replaced the wheel bearings in the last 5 years and the car has only 50,000km put on since I bought it – in other words, not really enough km’s to cause such a wear. In addition, there is no noise coming from either bearing.

I don’t want to just start throwing parts at the car and I know the whole system is connected (i.e. captive rotors), so my question is more on diagnosing the problem without having to tear down the car as opposed to how to fix it.
      – how to diagnose a bad wheel bearing when there’s no noise coming from the bearing?
      – how to diagnose a bad hub?

      any tips would be helpful.

        Simple test..
Raise the front end till the wheels are off the ground.
Place your hands at 9 and 3 o’clock position and try rocking the tire.
Do the same for 12 and 6 position.
If you feel movement the bearing hub is worn.

But I suspect the cause of your vibration is more likely due to warped rotors.
So if that is the case, I would also change the front pads as well.

          Thanks nightflyr:

just another question – do I need to remove or loosen the axle nut and then test for rocking in the wheel bearing?

I wonder if the Axle nut would keep things “together” so the rocking won’t be noticeable.

The axle nut should be tightened to spec.
If there is any movement with the nut tightened the issue would be with the bearing hub.
