So I went to go adjust my valves on my 1997 honda accord. Went to go see how lose the valves were before I adjusted them and realized that the last person who did it tightened them down. I couldn’t get my feeler gauge in there because it was tightened too much. Car ran fine with it though so I don’t think it did any damage. But I’m currently adjusting them to the correct clearances.

I’ve worked on a more than a few (not necessarily Honda) where the valve lash tightens up with time, so I wouldn’t be quick to blame the previous technician. The one thing I would want to know is just how ‘off’ are they. If you have an assortment of feller gauges try checking that out. If you are trying to get a .010″ feeler gauge in a space that’s .0098″ it’s not off a whole lot but it’s not going to fit either.
The valve lashes weren’t off by that much. Just a little on the tight side. I’ve completed the valve adjustment. I’ve cranked up the car and I can definitely hear some ticks so next weekend ill have to go in again and adjust the ones that are lose. It was quite a challenge to do though. Eric is right. This is an acquired skill that you learn over time. I can see what he means by that.
Yes. Exhaust was tighter. I have noticed during my drive after it was done that it unleashed a lot of power. Definitely feels a lot different with the valves finally adjusted correctly.
What you describe sounds normal. It does take time to develop that skill however. Also make sure the engine is stone cold when you do the work.
Yes I actually ran through them twice before putting it all back together. But I still have to do it again because I have a tick now. Can I adjust the valves on the base circle? I followed the service manual and it said to take the upper timing cover off and bring it to TDC and adjust #1 valves then rotate counter clockwise 90 degrees and adjust #3 valves. Turn counter clockwise 90 degrees and adjust #4 valves…etc…it takes quite some time getting all of that off so I was wondering if I could adjust the valves on the base circle
