I have a 1997 Ford F150 that intermittently will not start. Cranks with no firing. It will not start one day and the next day it will start like there wasn’t a problem. Sometimes it will be weeks or months before it will happen again. I have had this issue on and off for some time now. I have replaced the spark plugs and wires which I did as a minor tune up. Does any one have any idea what may be causing this intermittent issue? It has occurred twice in the last week now so I would like to get this fixed as soon as possible.

      Thank You In Advance

It could be a lot of things. The above listing shows some good information.

First you stated no secondary ignition. I guess you checked this with a HEI spark tester? If you have no secondary ignition; check the middle wire (red) on both coils and see if you have battery+ voltage with ignition switch in run position (12 volts). If not check Interior Fuse Panel Ignition Fuse 20 or 27 for bad fuse or bad connection.(I don’t have a service manual and doing this by memory..check your owners manual) [Make sure that fuse fits tight]. If all that is ok go back to the coils attach a*****LED Light***** between left and center wire at the coil connector and have someone crank the engine. The light should blink. If you have battery+ at the center coil connector terminal and no led light blinking(with engine cranking) when connected at the left or right wire of the coil connector the PCM/crankshaft sensor/camshaft sensor is bad or you have a wiring issue. In your case both coils work the same way …so the PCM/crankshaft sensor/camshaft sensor and circuit wiring would have to be checked. If the crankshaft sensor/camshaft sensor and circuit wiring is ok the PCM is not working.( the PCM controls the ignition coils)

The biggest problem I had with the F150’s with intermittent no starts in a couple of years (can’t remember what years) Ford used Airtex fuels pumps and for some reason when they went bad they did intermittent no starts just like the issue you’re having.

I also had a few intermittent no starts/stalls with the Interior Fuse Panel Ignition Fuse not tight enough and camshaft sensor…bad connection(s).

          Hopefully this helps

Starting with the plugs and wires was a good start. You need to determine what’s missing during the no start however. The basics on that are covered here.

The video is for a Ford 1983-1995 EEC- IV system.

EEC for the F-150 4.6/5.4/6.8 SOHC engines uses PowerPC, compared to Visteon Levanta the ECU is closer to EEC-VI. Diagnosis is different.
