We have a 1997 Honda Civic. Just the normal 4 door same as the one in your videos. The front end shakes at 40 mph while running at constant speed only. It can take some time to start. The resonance has to develop Add power or back off and it stops vibrating. It happens only in a straight line. It appears to be a rotational vibration in line with the direction of travel, not a wobble. it comes and goes. We discovered it shortly after we bought the car fifteen years ago. The steering is very responsive and I can’t feel any slop. There are no noises.
The car is stock except for the wheels which are aftermarket cast 15×3 1/2 JJ and the tires which are 195 55 15.
This is what has been done for various reasons, over the years.
Replaced tires with same size
Replaced wheels with same size.
Replaced CV axles
Replaced steering rack
Replaced calipers and pads
checked discs for run out
Alignment
Replaced drivers side engine mount.I have asked several mechanics about it while getting alignments and other repairs and they all say there is nothing loose or worn and that it should not happen. I had a theory but they said it was wrong. The Car Talk guys are no longer there so I will ask here. Just for S&G here is my theory which was called false. I thought that changing the wheel size may have altered the frequency that some parts the front end resonated , possibly springs, and it caused the shake. Has anyone sen this before? What could cause it and what can I try?
