You are going to need a wiring diagram for that man. The voltage regulator is usually internal on new alternators, but I certainly don’t know every make and model. In the top of this page, in the ‘Search’ window, type ‘chiltons manual’. It will lead you to a free online chilton’s manual that should give you info on testing the circuits you are looking at.

The site has wiring diagrams. You will need to have Adobe Reader up to date to view them.

My best buddy dreamer (he really is dreamy) brought up something that intrigues me. Does the car run? Does it need jump started repeatedly?

You will need to check your alternator field circuit.

Did you check your fuses and fusable links?

Here is a wiring diagram –

You will need to find a wiring diagram. I suspect you aren’t getting a signal from the PCM to turn the alternator on. There are usually two wires on the back of an alternator. One is a big-@ss wire that goes to the battery. The other is a control wire that tells the alternator how much voltage to put out. But before you do all of that, check all of your battery connections and ground connections. Make sure they are clean and tight. It’s amazing how often a dirty/corroded ground wire or connection will cause your issue. Make sure as well that when you installed the alternator, the mating surface between the alternator and engine block was clean. The alternator actually grounds through the block. And if it’s a typical side-post GM battery, look closely at the connections to the battery itself, and make sure you didn’t over-torque the battery bolt and strip the threads, etc.

yes the car runs, but the battery light is on and the alternator is not reading 13-14 volts it is 10 volts when the car is running

according to the print not to much there. the car must be running poor due to the low voltage. start with having the battery load tested.clean battery
terminals. do a voltage drop test on the wiring good luck and keep us posted. C8-)

Seeing as you have already replaced the battery and alternator (still might be a good idea to have them tested), you need to be looking at your field circuit of your charging system.

If the alternator does not receive power, it will not put out power. That’s the easiest i can explain it.

I agree, just because the parts are new doesn’t’ mean they are working correctly, it could also be an installation issue so you might want to go back and check all of your connections and that you have the correct part. College man posted my video on alternator diagnosis and I would suggest starting with that as if you hadn’t replaced any parts just to verify the parts are good and installation was done correctly.

ok i’ll get it tested thanks i’ll let you know if the new alienator is good or bad

You can also do the tests in the video that was posted by collegeman while it’s still on the car and that will tell you if the alternator is working properly or not as well as verify the connections at the battery. Don’t forget the battery is the most important part of the system in fact it’s the first thing you should check in a situation like this.
