I have a 1997 Honda Accord LX model,4 door, with power door locks, no keyless remote for this model. I have a question related to the door lock actuators. When I try to lock the doors while inside the car with the drive side door lock switch sometimes all of the locks will not lock. After a few tries with the driver side switch they will then lock. Same issue when trying to unlock the doors. I recently installed a new front left door lock actuator and that seemed to correct the problem. But after driving the car later in the day the same problems happened again. Any suggestions as to what to troubleshoot next with the door locks ?

When you replace the actuator was it Honda OE or aftermarket?
Unplug the new actuator and see if the locks go back to normal.
If so you found the issue.

That’s an interesting fix, I will open up my old actuator and try to reattach the rubber stops that are mentioned in the pictures. Thanks for the link. I will follow-up if this works.

One thing that is often overlooked on Hondas is that on the drivers side door if you use the power locks from the inside you need to pull the door handle and hold it in the open position before you hit the switch. If not, the doors will not lock. This is part of an anti-lock out designed into the system.

Also, I’ve seen issues with the passenger side door lock actuator or other door lock actuator causing issues with the other locks. You may need to check them all.

            Keep us posted.

Eric, I was not aware of the anti-lockout feature. Thanks for that tip. I have opened up my old lock actuator and then inspected the two rubber stops that were shown in college man’s link. Both stops were in perfect condition so I can rule out that problem for that actuator. The replacement actuator was Dorman and not Honda OEM. The OEM part was $160 vs $60 for the Dorman part. Sounds like I need to inspect each actuator and as Eric had mentioned.

You should be fine with the Dorman part. I wouldn’t invest OE money in a vehicle of that vintage myself unless it was a cream puff. Keep us posted on what you find with the other actuators. I would pay particular attention to the passenger side.

I was taking another look at my door lock actuator problem today. When I try to unlock the car from the inside using the driver front left and if all the locks don’t unlock. I then use the right passenger lock manually and then go back to the driver side lock all of the locks then unlock. Also I am hearing a whining noise from what sounds like the right front door area. I found a right front actuator on Ebay from $43 shipping was included, brand was not noted. The same Dorman lock is $110, can’t figure why it’s $50 more that the driver side. How do I test the lock to be sure that I am not just throwing away $43 ? Selling the car soon FYI, also only has 60,000 miles !
