I purchased a 1996 C280 Mercedes with 47,000 miles from my 97 year old neighbor. The car has all original parts ..only maintenance has been oil changes, battery, and tires. I have about 10 things to do to get it where I would feel good driving it on a trip. Has anyone owned or worked on one of these things. I will be doing most work myself…dealer wants $$$$$ to do repairs. Right now planning to change fan clutch, belt, antifreeze, and spark plugs.

Here is an update on my C280: I changed the water pump, belts and hoses and flushed out antifreeze with new. The water pump was a pain. I should have changed the thermostat a year ago. The car was running at 90C to 95C and now runs at 82C. I had to drill out a hex screw to get the pump off…I rounded it by not going in straight. I plan to change the brake fluid and transmission fluid next. Thinking about buying a prssure bleader from Motive (I think that is right). The tranny fluid calls for DEX II. I plan to use Valvoline Max life which is approve by Mercedes. For some reason Mercedes dealers look down on people who work on their own Mercedes. It is fun fixing things myself…Mercedes wanted $2000 to do what I did for $250….however it did take about 16 hours and the car was out of use for two weeks. I could do it now in about 6 hours. FYI..as I get older I find I work best when I watch TV and work on the car during commercials. Dave
