The bolt securing the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft on my 1996 honda civic d16y7 was found to be missing. There wad a woodruf key in the slots between the balancer and the crankshaft, but the timing sprocket could be moved around the axis of the crankshaft independently of the crankshaft about 300 degrees. Not sure, but it looks like there used to be a keyway (groove) molded into the inside diameter of the sprocket, but thatakey sheared off and was incorporated into the sprocket through friction. I have posted a pic of the interior of the sprocket for your consideration. Can anyone tell me whether my analysis is correct, whether they can think of a way for me to use the sprocket in the pic, or whether i just need to spot for the 86 dollars for a new one? Thanks, Jerry.

See the little smoothish area in the pic? Is that where the groove for a woodruf key should be?

As it turns out, there is no groove for a woodruf key in this particular sprocket. It is a protrusion molded into the sprocket itself. Must have been worn off as a result of the missing bolt from the end of the crankshaft. Ordered it, the bolt,a woodruf key, and a spacer. Total: $125.00. My ride’s broke for now. Hopefully it wont be this weekend, but it looks like I will be even…???broker???.

Hi Jerry, How do the splines look on the shaft where the crankshaft sprocket came off? Are they good and clean/ undamaged? Hopefully so. Were you experiencing any engine trouble that led to this discovery?
It’s hard to believe that bolt went missing if set even close to factory torque. Those bolts are torqued some kind of super tight. I’ve actually bent 1/2 extensions before while breaking them loose. I hope this all turns out well for you.

One other thought/ question… How does the woodruff key channel look in the crank pulley? If damaged, you would need a new crank pulley too.

Woodruf keys are relatively inexpensive, so i purchased a new one for yhe pulley. There sctually are no splines on the crankshaft
It’s smooth as a baby’s bottom. The groove on the crankshaft is fine. Total for parts came y 125 dollars and change. Yes, there was a severe diminution in power, and yhe engine soumded like it wasnt breayhing at all. I dont think it did any damage internally, but when the parts come in this weekend, we’ll find out. Thanks for the feedback. Oh, and i bought the car recently off of craigslist on the cheap. There were anumber of home engineering projects on the vehicle that i am slowly correcting. I figure that the knuckleheads i bought it off of figured it didn’t really need that bolt, because the threads in the endof the shaft look fine, and i would think they would have been buggared up otherwise. Oh well, we’ll see how it wotks out. Jerry.

I’m talking about the inner crank shaft where the crank sprocket (in your picture) fits over the shaft. It’s definitely designed to be fitted over a spline…How does that look?

I know that it looks like there should be splines on the crankshaft, but there are not. I have looked at numerous images of the crankshaft in new condition and have yet to find splines on the shaft. Have you actualy dealt with that particular model (d16y7) ? If so, then i wm going to have to replace the shaft, but i am relatively certain that it is designed to be a smooth crankshaft.

Anyone kwow the answer to the above question with certainty?

I think the grooves in the sprocket inside diameter are there to help keep the sprocket and the shaft from seizing together.

The groove for the woodruf key on the balancer and for the protrusion on the undamaged (new) sprocket, the groove on the shaft that is, is in good shape.

You know it’s been a while…I looked at some new ones online and I think you’re correct. Sorry for the unintended consternation. It looks very much like it’s fitted for a spline, but that crank is smooth. My bad…Hope all this works out for you. I had to replace a crank sensor on a 96 Accord not too long ago with a similar set up.
