      EDIT: SOLVED! PROBLEM: ROD KNOCK

      Hello fellow enthusiasts!

I recently bought a 1996 Honda Civic 1.5i VTEC (european model), with the D15z6 engine and the VTEC-E lean burn system. The car has 220.000km or 140.000 miles.

What brings me here is that when I’m in gear, I hear the knocking sound you can kind of hear in the video. It is very relevant between 2000 and 3000rpm, and then it sort of fades of. This only happens when the car is moving in gear with light or medium throttle openings. Wide open it kind of fades away a bit.

When I rev the engine with the car stationary only very seldom does it make a resemblance to this noice.

I should mention that the header is cracked by the O2 sensor, very common problem in these cars, since the catalyst is built in the exhaust header.

So, what do you think this knocking might be?

I would greatly appreciate any advice and will follow up on any discoverings!

      Cheers!

Also, when the car is moving at constant speed, I can’t hear the noise, only when accelerating!

I should also point out that I cut the old oil filter open and it didn’t have any kind of shavings or particles! So probably worn bearings are out…

Here’s a simple diagnosis for rod knock that would put you on more solid ground with that conclusion:

It could be a rod as mentioned by civvy. Definitely worth looking into. I recently had similar symptoms in your description. For me it ended up being a loose bolt in my alternator bracket. It had backed out from vibration. Only heard a knocking at low RPM and dissipated after accelerating. I could wiggle the alternator and that was the problem. Before doing anything I recommend checking for loose bolts and parts. Could be something as simple as that.

I would think that rod knock would make itself known under all conditions: idle, acceleration/decelleration, steady cruise, full throttle, in gear and in neutral. For starters, I’d look at repairing your cracked exhaust. You might be hearing nothing more than an exhaust leak.

Thank you all for your replys!

I will defeanetly look into loose bolts on the accessories and later will fix the manifold. Just have to spend money on other things first.

Monday I will take the car to a mechanic for him to give a good look on what the cause might be and I will keep you posted! 🙂

Again, I greatly appreciate your inputs! B)

                    Hi guys!

So I took the car to the mechanic and he told me that it was rod knock. However, he played with the timing a bit, so that when it was retarded the knocking disappeared and when it was fully advanced, the knocking got louder. We could listen for the knock with the car stactionary, and the sound defeneatly came from the back of the engine, not the front, so I guess the craked exhaust isn’t the culprit.

Does this make any sence to you? The spark plugs are in good condition!

So, just to give some conclusion to this topic, yes, it was rod knock after all. I bought another engine and will swap it soon! Thanks everybody for your inputs!
