1996 Honda Accord Stalling

      Hi I have a 1996 Honda Accord 4 cylinder that is intermittently stalling. The vehicle will shut off while driving or while idling and after it does this it is difficult to start back but will start. I have had the vtec solenoid, the valve cover gasket, the spark plugs, wires and distributor rotor/cap replaced as well.

      OTHER Things since original work:

      May 16 2013, Replaced the Main Relay/Fuel Pump Relay, still having stalling. I do notice that the stalling is much more frequent when the car has been running a while. I was able (when driving/testing) to let the vehicle sit for 10 or so minutes and it would start back up immediately, but if I tried as soon as it stalled I would have difficulty. The Main Relay and casing is getting very hot to the touch after driving for about an hour or so.

      May 31 2013, Replaced the Ignition Switch this morning hoping that might be the problem as it looks like one of the only things I can still do on my own. I am still getting stalling or the engine/tachometer dropping and immediately restarting. I got it home, let it sit for 5 or so minutes and it cranked right up.

      here are my specs EDIT: (No check engine light is on)

      Here are a couple of videos I took today (June 3) one is a surge while driving at a highway speed (80mph) on even/level terrain and constant speed. The second one is after driving (you can see the Odometer differences) about 95 miles testing it.

        I would replace the Fuel Filter as well as check the fuel injectors to make sure they are not clogged. Usually stalling is due to lack of fuel. Does the engine run rough?

          Check the fuel pressure and compare the pressure you get with what the spec for your vehicle is.

            I really should think you should gather evidence of a failure before just throwing anymore parts at it.

            First thing I would do it check the fuel pressure and compare it to spec.

            But honestly, it sounds to me like it may be the crank position sensor, (or cam position sensor) that is failing.

            These can be hard to diagnose without a lab scope but an easy way to test the CAM position sensor is to tap on it with a hammer while the engine is running. If it stalls, then there is your problem!

            If either of these sensors fail, the computer will not know where the engine is in terms of which cylinder should fire next. As a result, the car stalls.

              Try wiggling the key in the ignition with the car running.
              If it stalls replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch.

                  I had one of this come in to the shop. Intermittent stalling. The car would drive fine for a few minutes then stall. It would start back up once the engine was cool. Turn out to be the ignitor. Try this next time it stalls pour cold water on the ignitor (to cool it down) if the car starts right back up problem solved.
