My Dad’s 1996 Honda Accord 4 CYL non VTEC had an issue where the original alternator smoked and seized breaking the drive belt.

I replaced the alternator with another one and new alternator began smoking. The drive belt is NOT too tight still has plenty of slack (not too much)

Charging the battery at 14.34 volts…. still smoking.. Battery is about 1 year old and does not charge above 20 amps.

Car was welded on I don’t know if it was arc welding or gas welding.

Are you sure it’s not coming from the AC compressor? I had a similar issue on my 1996 Accord. The AC compressor pulley is right underneath the alternator, so when mine smoked, I originally thought it was the alternator as well. Do you hear a noise while the engine is running. Grab the AC compressor pulley and see if it is loose, my bearing was totally shot.

What kind of replacement alternator did you get? OEM, AutoZone reman?

Smoking alternators are generally caused by a short in the diode rectifier pack built into the alternator. If you got an AutoZone reman and it smoked, and the original hadn’t been smoking, I’d say whatever, AutoZone crap, exchange it. But two is hard to ignore. Smart money says you have a short to ground in the battery charging circuit. I think the next step is to consult the circuit diagram in your Haynes manual or factory service manual and follow the charging circuit inspecting for damaged insulation and testing for continuity to ground where there should be none.

Thank You I discovered the car was welded on I do not know if the battery was disconnected. It could mean either the battery itself is destroyed or the ECM is causing this.

                Hello

Thank you for all your help. I did resolve the situation.

It was a power steering leak onto the belt. It destroyed the belt and I replaced a line and the belt and everything is ok.
