I have a 1996 honda accord ex 90,000 miles, 4cyl no vtec, sedan, manual. I have read though the automotive idle FAQ and im wondering where it would be a good idea to begin, it seems the surging idle is the common problem I cant find much on my issue. The car when fully warmed up idles at about 400-500rpm and feels quite rough, I sometimes feel the need to keep my foot on the gas a bit at stop lights just so it feels smoother. When starting it cold it idles at about 1500rpm until it warms up. Other than that no symptoms at all, no check engine light, and car seems to run great. Coolant is topped off and the system is bled.

Sounds like a bad idle air control valve.

As above I’d say IAC valve as well , can they be cleaned on Hondas ? , I’m unfamiliar with them

Some times you can clean them, but most of the time they’ll only work good for a bit then stop working again. Is usually best to just go head and replace it.

Thanks for the help guys I will look into that. Of course it has to be $210 new. Is this something I shouldn’t buy used? And if it is the IAC valve do you think it would be bad to keep driving it the way it is for a while? I dont exactly have the money for it right now..

Iac can be cleaned. It’s usually just cleaning out the screen as well as any carbon crud from the intake manifold

You can go to a junk yard and look for one. Pretty simple to take off, just two bolts holding it to the intake. You can also try cleaning it, it’s worth a shot.

750 to 850 is where it should idle when warmed up. High idle when cold is to be expected. Clean the iac.

I recently bought a 1998 Civic with a rough and sporadic idle. Before you buy anything, check all systems first. In my case, I cleaned the throttle body, checked the air filter, coolant, and verified the spark plugs and wires were changed. I didn’t clean the IAC valve. I just didn’t think about it. I did all this for good measure not expecting anything and I was right, no changes. The previous owner had the ignition timing set when the timing belt was done. I double checked the timing using the honda procedure and found it was off significantly. I adjusted it appropriately and it’s doing fine thus far.

on my old Holden Commodore , that had a 3.8 V6 , they were easy peasy to remove and clean , held in by two screws , and a electrical plug , mind you they were cheap as chips to replace as well .
