I have a 1996 Honda Accord EX with a 4 cylinder VTEC automatic. As I am speeding up the transmission shifts hard, causing the steering wheel to jerk to the right. It not really a huge jerk, but it is certainly noticeable.

I have heard that the V6 transmissions are junk, but not too much on the 4.

Have you checked the fluid level and the fluid condition?

Sorry for bringing this post back from the dead:

But it appears that it needs to be flushed, however, I am unsure when/if it was flushed before.

I have heard bad stories about flushing a transmission that hasn’t been flushed in a long time. Should I continue on with a flush, should I just drain and refill it once, or should I just leave it?

How is appear that it needs to be flushed? Is fluid dark/brown, smells burnt? How many miles on transmission? How is the level of fluid?

Its brown, I didn’t smell it. The level appears to be a little above the upper level.

Did you properly check the level? You don’t just pull out dipstick like you do with engine oil. It has to be at hot/operating temperature and has to be in park.

Brown transmission fluid means it is old or burned and overheating (smell)… Nothing good can happen from leaving it in there (yes, there is the school of thought about leaving tranny fluid in due to gritty concentration which I agree with)…. However, when it is burned, that is another issue… If you are so inclined, change the fluid and hope for the best…. It may help, it may not…

The 96 model year transmissions were not problem transmissions. Those started in 99. That said, it is imperative that only Honda transmission fluid be used in Honda automatics for proper shift quality. Your’s being as old as it is however, anything could be in there and possibly was in there for some time. I don’t recommend a ‘flush’. If you want, change the transmission fluid 3 times with a short drive in between each fluid change and that should do the trick. Honestly, I’m not sure if it will help, especially if you have worn internals. Also, you don’t check Honda transmission fluid in the same way as other transmissions. You need the engine hot and OFF to check the fluid level. Checking the fluid level with the engine running will result in overfilling the transmission. Overfilling the transmission fluid can result in transmission failure. This article and this video may be helpful also.

Good luck and keep us posted.
