I have a 1996 full size GMC pickup that the rear turn signal bulbs keep melting the bulb base. The bulb is either a 3057 black flat base or a 3157 flat black base. Both will work as the only difference in the bulb besides the number is the 3157 is a little brighter when the running lights are on. I have tried both types of bulbs and eventually the little wire that goes in the bulb will melt into the plastic and not make contact with the socket connector. I enclosed a picture and hope it is readable.

      Thanks,
      Mike

Addendum= I replaced the tail light circuit boards put in new bulbs and maybe that will fix it .
I thank everyone who responded with a very helpful answer.

How is the other end of the connector? High resistance = high heat. A lot of times on domestics I just put dielectric grease in the connector to help keep things cool. Replace your bulb and add a bit of dielectic grease and you will be in good shape

I would say check voltage drop at the connector.
Maybe time for a new connector, might be loose and arc causing heat.
Check voltage while engine is running, might be over charge from alternator.

Maybe a picture of the connector….and voltage reading there too?

chevy trucks have issues with the boards the bulbs plug into. they get brittle as they age and start malfunctioning. try the grease bit and if not you might try replacing the bulb board. can buy them at Oreillys or autozone. most of the time they are off the shelf items.

check the voltage at the connector.should be 12v
also check the connector.Try cleaning out the connector.
if old dirt and bulb grease is in the socket. It can cause
              resistance.

+1 it does seem like an issue with too much resistance or they may be staying on all the time. The brake lights are on the same circuit. You might want to make sure that the brake lights aren’t on all the time. If they are you could have a bad brake light switch.
