My dad’s truck ran out of gas yesterday. After he refilled the tank, the car won’t start. It would try to crank for a split second, and all he hear is a continuous fast clicking sound(coming from the starter?). When we hooked it up to a jump starter, it would crank but won’t start, and no more fast clicking noise. Where should start looking?

With the key on engine off, can you hear the fuel pump priming? You can also spray some ether into the throttle body to see if the truck will start. If it does, you have a fuel problem. It kinda sounds like it killed the fuel pump, but I’m just guessing. Diagnose everything first.

Start by making sure your batt is fully charged since you had to use a jumper. next locate the schrader valve on the fuel rail ( drivers side fuel rail next to the t/body ) turn the key to on ( but dont crank ) after a two count turn off and then back to on repeat two more times. immediatly try to start the truck. if nothing then depress the schrader valve with a screw driver , see if any fuel comes out. sounds like the pump may have failed.

Glad you found the problem, thanks for the update. FYI, try not to run low or out of fuel often as this is what damages most fuel pumps. The pump likes to be submerged in fuel to stay cool.
