      Hopefully someone more experienced in the electrical side of things can chime in on this one.

      My mom just bought a 96 ram 1500 with the 5.2, it wasn’t running when she bought it, but it was a clean truck, and for what the truck has and what she paid for it, it was a good deal to jump on.
      Anyhow, the guy she bought it from said he thought the crank position sensor was the issue, ok $70 bucks, worth a shot. well I turned the key to the ON position and listened for the fuel pump to prime and it didn’t, checked for pressure at the rail and there was none. so I checked the 20A fuse under the hood for the fuel pump and sure enough it was blown. so I swapped it with a slightly higher amperage fuse just to test it and the fuel pump primed and the truck fired up, then shut down. now when you turn the key to the ON position, the fuel pump just keeps running, and the relays in the underhood block click like crazy until you turn the key off. and it won’t start back up. anyone have any ideas? I’m leaning towards a short in the circuit, or a bad ECM possibly, but before I start really getting into this thing I wanted to get some suggestions. thanks in advance.

        right on, thanks for finding that.
        i should be able to get a good idea of the solenoids based off those specs, the governor has the least amount of windings so it’ll be the lowest impedence, the 1-2 and 3-4 solenoids should both have the same impendence. (i think its a 1-2 and 3-4 solenoids in the little pack under there… guess i’ll find out lol

          I doubt the transmission itself caused melted wiring. The transmission would have already showed you some other evidence of being horribly smoked. That means black fluid with a burnt smell to it. A lot of clutch material sitting in the pan beyond normal wear. That and the entire harness inside the transmission would have to be melted down.

          My money is on a shorted solenoid burning up the wiring.

            the fluid was black as squid ink and smelled like burgers left on the grill all afternoon, there was a lot of crap in the bottom of the pan, not the worst I’ve seen, but no great shakes either. about 8 inches of the harness shows signs of being real hot, basically anywhere on the wires that was inside of the wire loom it has around it, and whatever was in the fluid. i had a similar issue like the fluid and burned guts like this in a 96 grand Cherokee i had, dumped the trans, put a new filter and fluid in it and got another few thousand miles out of it before selling it still running and shifting. idk the history on this one though, so we’ll see.

              Well dang, this truck is just an endless heap of no fun. I hope it runs and drives well enough to put a for sale sign on it.

                yeah, its seeming like an S.O.B lol but, on the good side.. it has a 6″ lift properly done, 38″ super swampers on 17’s, little to no rust on the body, and a straight clean frame. so its worth putting a little work into. oh, and it came with a CB, silver linings man…silver linings. and my mom loves the stupid thing

                    If you’re going to invest then, consider rebuilding the transmission when it needs it. Those transmissions are pretty failure prone and I’d hate to see you drop money on another used one that won’t live a long life either.

                      i know a guy locally that used to do rebuilds for the garage i worked at, If it comes to it I’ll be giving him a call. I’m not even going to waste my money on a boneyard Chrysler transmission…lipstick on a pig.

                        well, figured I’d post a conclusion to this journey.

                        fixed the trans harness, put some new fluid and filter in it. and it needs way more work than I have the time to fix and go over to make sure it’s a feasible daily driver for my mom.
                        talked it over with my mom today on what her plans were for it, and probably just going to sell it. it’s technically a running/driving truck, so I should at least be able to get my money back out of it.

                        thanks everyone for the input and suggestions, I know I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I have in this amount of time without you guys. later on.
