My 1996 chevy k1500 with a 350 vortec in it has 215000 miles burns no oil but it does leak oil a little but I was wondering when it’s cold like usually in the negatives it sounds almost exactly like a diesel after it warms up it sounds fine I’m just curious as to whether I should be concerned about it or not?

10w30 engine oil mean the cold start viscosity (10w30 is greater then the viscosity when the engine is hot 10w30. So if you use the 5w30 insted your recommended 10w30 in your engine, you will have more noise. You can change your oil again for the 10w30 or you can add Lucas oil engine fix. It’s up to you.
Lucas upper cylinder lubricant fuel additive reduce greatly the cylender noise and clean your injector.

My first thought was also oil viscosity. Make sure you’re using the correct oil viscosity for your vehicle for your climate. It sounds like it’s pretty cold where you are. You might consider a block heater for the colder months. This will help with oil starvation during cold start ups.
I checked and it does have 5w 30 in it and oil pressure is good I hadn’t driven for about a week and it isn’t garaged but it started right up and sounded fine and it was pretty cold so I don’t know. It is due for an oil change in about a hundred miles though.

Some oil last longer then another depending the brand. Some brand add cleaning agent to reduce friction whit the small gunk (burn oil) particle. Then if you don’t use the viscosity needed, the oil will, in some case, not last as long It’s should be. At the end ordinary oil contain minerals that add frictions and react whit oxygen. This impurities permit to the oil to last long as the refine oil (synthetic oil) that contain no impurities. So It’s normal you eard a different engine sound. It’s normal and It’s your normal sound engine. When the oil is durty, the engine will not sound smoothly. If you change the oil is few 1000 miles, I will change the oil right away. Just to be sure.

The oil is getting changed tomorrow, however I checked the oil and it was a little low it was still in the operating range just not at the top so I put some oil in it and the noise isn’t there any more when it’s cold also I have an oil leak that has progressively worse it seems lately I think that may have contributed as well and I plan on getting it fixed soon hopefully.
