      hello all,
i am working on a 95 jeep grand cherokee with a 4.0 engine. it is 4×4. the car was fine when it was shut off. but when it was restarted it would only drive in first gear and sometimes 2nd gear and overdrive will work. but when you shift it in to 1st gear it is slightly slaming in to gear. when its put in reverse it makes a grinding noise and wont move. i am thinking its the shifting solenoid but not sure. any advice would be a great help. thank you in advance. banana:

check the fluid level and condition. If its grinding and
won’t move sounds like a damaged transmission. You could
pull the pan and look for particles.check engine light on?

ok i will try that. the check engine light is not on at this time. i had another set of eyes on it and he said it sounds like it not fully engaging. i was wondering if changing the transmission fluid and filter would help at all.

You could try that. But if there is alot of shavings in the pan
then you may have a serious problem.

+1 with grinding and shavings in the pan it’s not looking good. It sounds like an internal failure of the transmission. Keep us posted on what you find.

update: i dropped the pan today. fluid was pink and looked good but when i looked in the pan there was some metal shavings in there on the filter as well. i cleaned the pan out real good and put some lucus in it. drove it around and 1 and 2 and drive came back but the reverse is still grinding. i told him best bet to take it to the shop and get a new tranny.

You’re most welcome. I hope you find a solution to that problem. Those transmissions actually have a pretty high failure rate unfortunately. I’d recommend a good reman replacement if you’re looking to keep it. Keep us posted.
