I just purchased this car for my son a few weeks , it’s a 95 Accord, 4 cylinder, manual transmission and up till a couple days ago it’s been fine. Issue , originally, after sitting for hours/overnight it won’t start. Eventually it did star for him after waiting a few minutes and trying again, now tho it doesn’t seem like it’s going to start at all.

Our temperatures have not been really hot or cold but the issue itself sounded like the main relay. Pulled it out and it looked fine but decided to replace it anyways hoping that was the issue. It wasn’t, he returned it and put the original back in. Right now when you turn the key the dash lights illuminate, turn the key to run and it turns over but doesn’t start. The cel remains on at all times, don’t hear any clicks and can’t hear the fuel pump prime, it’s just silent.

I have read different information about this issue and haven’t come across one exactly like his so figured I would post, asking for help. I am not at all a mechanic but can replace parts etc, just need help figuring where to start and possibly someone has has the same issues.

I watched the available videos on the relay, diagnosing starting issues and several others but hoping the said symptoms can help narrow it down.

      Thanks for any replies given.

Anyone have further suggestions? All my testing has basically ended with learning the cel stays on, trying to pull codes doesn’t do anything either, the cel just remains on. Not getting power to the fuel pump, supplying power the pump works but the car still doesn’t start but does with gas poured into cylinders via spark plug holes. Replaced mfr and resoldered original with no change. Ignition switch has continuity when testing so I assume it’s good?

Really could use some help getting this car back on the road.

        Thanks

Figured I would pop the computer and have a look see anyways…

Edit-whatever reason, picture won’t upload. Burnt capacitor. Heading to pull it yard now with high hopes.

Just finished up installing the new to the car ecu, started right up. Went to the local u-pull it and after wandering around for hours checking Honda’s for the right one and not finding it I called another traditional yard and they had it. $80 no return or exchange, almost didn’t buy it but decided my time I have spent diagnosing it was worth at least that.

To anyone else that finds this thread while searching for reasons why their Honda accord won’t start, here’s the symptoms again.

Car started having starting issues, would turn over but not always start. Finally it wouldn’t start at all, cel remained on at all times, tho it was never on till the car wouldn’t start at all.

1.Checked all fuses, grounds etc. All good. Tried jumping the service port to get some codes, cel wouldn’t flash it just remained lit.

              2. Checked, re-soldered the mfr even tho it looked fine, replaced it, same issue.

              3. Checked for spark at all plugs, had good spark, eliminating spark.

              4. Checked ignition switch, had continuity at the correct terminals when it should.

              5. Poured gasoline into the cylinders, car would run for a second, started checking for fuel. No power to fuel pump, ran battery and ground to pump it would run but car still wouldn’t start.

              6. Pulled ecu from passenger kick panel, removed cover and found a capacitor had fried itself as well as part of the circuit board.

              7. Spend all day tracking the correct one down, install it, profit.

Yes – fantastic job. I’ll bet that computer cost some bank if purchased brand new. Just curious, where again is the computer located? My daughter has a 99 Accord so I want to be prepared just in case. Also, were you able to do any deeper diagnostics on the failed board? It almost looks like a contact shorted over to one of the pins of the capacitor and fried it. Usually when electrolytic capacitors go bad, they become dis-formed, as in no longer flat on the top, or they’ll literally blow their tops completely. Certainly it can vary and it’s anybody’s guess as to the cause at this point. Again, nice job.

@mx4cc904 The capacitor was likely tantalum. They are subject to catastrophic failure and burning as on the board.
