 Umm…S’cuse me if this has been covered before.

I am completely new to working on Asian vehicles. This is a simple query. I am working on a girlfriend’s 1994 Toyota Corolla DX-Wagon….1.8 ltr., 4 cylinder. Miles: don’t know.

Where the heck is the bloody thermostat located?? It is NOT connected to the top radiator hose. I’m thinking it must be bassackward and connected to the bottom radiator hose going into the engine block at the top connection. I’m afraid to try to read the owners manual for info….It may be written backwards as well.

If this is in fact, the location…how difficult is it to make that repair?

      Thanks guys

dont know if this helps but usually following radiator hoses helps, thermostats are quite frequently located on intakes, near water pumps, ect….

here is a video for a 2E engine maybe the engine in the car you are working on is similar..

Bottom hose according to this. My ’87 Corolla is the same.

That is what I was thinking…what a stupid place to put something that usually needs maintainance. Glad that I did not get too heavily into this repair!

            Thanks guys!

The reason they put them there is because it has reverse cooling. The old way is the coolant goes from the rad through the pump into the block, to the cylinder head and back to the rad. (upper hose)

Since Toyota and now many engineers got smart they decided that the cylinder head requires the most cooling so the coolant goes from the block through the water pump, to the radiator, (lower hose) to the cylinder head (upper hose) and then back to the block.

I’m really surprised it took so long for engineers to figure that out.

So it is true. The statement made by me in my first post tells it all: “I am completely new to working on Asian vehicles.” I had trouble finding much of anything on-line about doing the repair. When I watched 13aceofspades video, it was very helpful. I was also glad to realise I was not going nutty!

The only thing I’ll add here is to recommend an OE thermostat. The thermostat is a very important component in a modern engine. For that reason, use the best part you can afford. Also, if you don’t have any cooling system issues, I would leave it alone. I only service thermostats if I find a problem with one. Also, it’s very important that you bleed the air out of the cooling system after you replace the thermostat or anytime you open the fuel system for that matter.

Good luck and look us up again if you need anything else.

                    Thanks again, Eric!

Did all of the “burping” of the cooling system. Added fresh coolant and did some minor repair with a vacuum leak. Her poor old car runs remarkably well for a car which has not had regular maintainance for the past 2 years. Loads of help here in the foursome.

I’m very glad that I found your website and all of your videos on the tube.
In short, your topics and instruction have made me bravely go where I was afraid to go before, and I’ve saved a lot of $$$$$ !

Just curious– do all cars have the coolant bleeder valve or not?

                          Not all have the bleeder.

check out the link/video on bleeding the cooling system
                              minus the bleeder.
