A buddy has a 94 v6 mustang with the AODE transmission, the previous owner told him the trans had been replaced with a 95-96 AODE at some point, I looked it over and it looked to be the same transmission you would expect to find in the car.

well, it has ran and drove flawlessly up until yesterday when it started acting up, he was stopped put it in drive, and did a small burnout, the car drove fine, when he fired it back up from being parked in his driveway he put it in reverse and it moved forward.

I went and checked out the linkage for him, and its all solid on the external of the trans, and is adjusted properly, but it will move forward in every gear including park, doesn’t matter if you disconnect the shift cable and shift the gear selector manually from the side of the transmission. it moves forward.

any ideas what would be causing this? I was thinking Transmission Range Sensor or manual shift valve in the valvebody not synced up with the linkage, or loose linkage inside the pan/case, any other suggestions? I don’t think the transmission is bad, but I wanted to get some opinions or suggestions before I go drop the pan and get wrist deep in an AODE.

thanks in advance for any ideas.

I would check the manual valve (the part inside the pan that the external linkage connects to) and verify the linkage is operating properly. Also, some clutch steels could have heat-welded together (generally the vehicle will move forward in neutral also when this happens). Dropping the pan will also give you an idea of the mechanical health, if there is metal or a lot of friction material it’s probably going to need a rebuild. Another possibility is if the weld broke between the reverse gear and sun gear shell it would also have this symptom. The snap ring will most likely break as well when this occurs.

right on, that’s what I was thinking. I didn’t drop the pan today, but I did drive it around, and I messed with the shifter a bit and it finally started using reverse and neutral, but then it wouldn’t go forward. so I put it back up in the air, and disconnected the linkage and shifted it manually from underneath with the wheels in the air, sure enough it went into all the gear like it should. but if you put it back down on the tires it wouldn’t move in drive. so I got a couple quarts of fluid because it showed a little low and put them in. it would move in drive, but only if you played the gas for a few seconds, then it finally figured itself out and started moving and shifting til you came to a stop and had to play with it all over again.
it did that enough for a test drive, and when I parked it the last time, it wouldn’t move in drive now AT ALL, so we had to tow it back to my buddies house and now itll go into park, reverse, and neutral just fine, but theres a really high pitched (not very loud) whine in drive, so I think the clutches are bad and its just spinning metal on metal..this Friday I’m going to be helping him with it again, I’m going to drop the pan and check for any remnants and inspect the linkage/manual valve and valvebody if there isn’t a bunch of metal or friction material. fingers crossed we can get her back on the road, but I’m beginning to think a trans replacement is in the cards.
