Hey guys, i’m back on here!! And also talking about my worktruck, I swear this truck has a million things wrong no wonder the dairy won’t fix it!! Well anyways, my truck has been recently acting weak when going up hills, like i’ll be running full speed (ABOUT 55-65 MPH) in top gear (HAS TOTAL 6 GEARS) to get up a 2 mile hill and she’ll quickly bog down to 4th gear and I won’t put it in 3rd because, (well some of you know why I won’t put her in 3rd and if you want to know why just search (International 4900 Transmission probs), sometimes i’ll have to go to 2nd gear. But it seems the turbo is lacking power. Whenever i get up to 20,000 RPM’s, the turbo will sound extremely loud to where you’ll have bad hearing for about 20 minutes afterwards, and it’s like a loud deep sound coming from the turbo. it sounds like there’s a hole in something. Also whenever the turbo starts to loose it’s power going up a hill the truck will start to smoke a little bit. does anyone know what could be wrong? P.S the turbo was put in this past october.

you might have a leak in the turbo gasket. i’ve made this repair many times on various trucks. I think the best way to diagnose this problem is to bring the engine up to rpm and feel for exhaust gas around the turbo.

Do you know what would explai n the smoke and the loss of power? Because when i’m at low (5,000-17,000 RPM’s) you can’t even hea the turbo, it’s like it’s not even there anymore. When she was first put in, you could here that loud whistling that usuallu goes with a turbo but now it’s not hearable. Also, just as an FYI, the Redskins ain’t chaging their name!!! I’ll be pissed if they do bud! Them saying the name “REDSKINS” is similar to the “N” word, is so ignorant! The league and the team has already said the name stands for brave and passionate people(INDIANS) don’t worry about what the dictionary says! Heck, they’ve even bashed on the logo saying it’s misleading and what not about the indians. The damn Indian looks PROUD on the helmet!!!

Here is a pretty decent chart o’ turbo diagnosis; the problem might be as simple as taking out that air cleaner and hosing it down:

I hope the skins never change their name. It was good enough back in 72′ and it’s good enough today… too much history involved.

 Don’t mess with redskins nation.

That chart was actually cool and helpful of what could happen, but I don’t think it was the air cleaner because that wouldn’t cause the turbo to sound like it’s got a hole in it. Plus, we don’t live in a dirty air quality place(Newark,DE). I think from looking at the chart, the turbo needs new gaskets or it’s cracked somewhere.

Two things come to mind: impeller damaged by heat; leaks in the system (exhaust &/or intake. Hook up a boost gauge and see what you get…
More likely, it is a leak on the compressor side. It could be a hole in one of the rubber hoses, or there could be a hole in the ATA cooler if so equipped. I’m inclined to think it’s a leak because, as you pointed out -the truck begins to smoke. If it isn’t equipped with ATA after-cooling look at the air intake hoses and inspect for oil soaked, softened hoses -old, soft hoses can collapse. If there is a soft hose, it can collapse causing a restriction between the air cleaner and turbo resulting in loss of power and excessive smoke (unburned fuel).

One more thing to consider, and it does cause changes in sound -the waste gate (if so equipped)

I’m on board with checking the turbo and it’s connecting components. Any leaks in the tubing, or damage to the turbo can cause the symptoms you describe.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Well, just as a quick update, the Ol’ International 4900 has died. The turbo blew, gasket went with it and then the engine ran away while I was driving down I-95. Kept going til I got to the dairy, luckily made it because the lights on Rte 202 were all green so didn’t have to stop. The engine finally blew cause the mechancis just let it go. The tranny they said went with it somehow so she’s just sittin at the dairy waiting for her ride to the scrap. Or waiting for the arrival of a NEW engine. Already got a new tranny. So for now i’ve been in a 95′ International 4900 same engine with an Eaton 6 spd. Never wants to get in 1st gear and 2nd. Doesn’t like to be popped out in 1st an 2nd gear either. So with the last truck it never wanted to stay in gear. With this truck it always wants to stay in gear but never goes in. I would like an explaintion of that. It’s got an 84′ Hackney Dairy Special Refridgerated box with an 84′ Thermo King Fuelsaver. Works great.. also, the turbo on this truck has a deafening whistle when i get up near 1500 and 2500 RPM’s. Sounds like an air leak. Doesn’t provide a whole lotta boost like it did before. Didn’t whistle like that til’ I rode up a 3 mile steep hill and hit a huge hole in the road on 95.
